That's absurd and if he was sooo offended, he would have left the restaurant immediately or asked to see the manager. There isn't enough information to make an accurate assessment, IMO. He could be a serial non-tipper for all we know. She could be married to a Grand Wizard. All we have to go on is a receipt with a little handwritten note and a twitter post littered with horrifying grammar and spelling.

Apparently not. I guess he decided to send her a message the way he did. I'm not sure why you assume to know what his level of offense was or what behavior it should have called for. The "boys" reference was clearly lost on her or she wouldn't have posted the receipt online. You're right that we don't have enough info and it's possible he's just a serial non-tipper. But the fact that he took the trouble to write the note indicates the "boys" thing was the reason... otherwise why write the note ?

Sapp is à dick and all. But maybe she didnt deserve a tip. Im à good tipper and I've not left one before because I didnt feel like they deserved one. Its not being cheap, the few times that I have done it have been to prove à point on how to treat customers.

To a lot of people $5 is a lot of money; tons of kids would love to have that $5 so they can eat. To my kids, that is a lunch at school. but to inner city kids that might be the difference between eating anything today or not. With that kind of thought process I hope you donate to your local food pantries and charities.

I don't see the relevance. If they can't afford a $5 tip because it will mean they can't eat the next day, then they shouldn't be going out to these kinds of restaurants in the first place.

Guilty conscience? Why would she go to the trouble to embarrass him if she knew she was in the wrong and could be deemed racist? Maybe we are giving both of them a little too much credit? :noidea:

I worked as a waiter in a casino cafe for 6 months. You want to talk about people who stiff you on tips. There was one who told me she wouldn't tip because she didn't tell me to not put powder sugar on her French Toast (my first time serving her and she was a regular for around 15 years I was told). I asked her if she wanted me to get her another one, she said "Of course." I told her no, and walked away.

But, many people gamble away all their money, then get a tenderloin or something, eat almost half of it and say it wasn't cooked good enough and they won't pay for the meal. There was one lady who had a coin bowl full of quarters and got excellent treatment, gave me 17 cents.

However, I was the only waiter on my shift for 3 months and there were times it was impossible for me to do excellent service. If I gave bad service, I expected not to be tipped. If I get bad service, I will not tip. If I feel the server is trying to give good service, I will give them as good of a tip as if they actually do give good service.

I thought Sapp went too far to write what he wrote, but not tipping for bad service is not inappropriate IMO.

I think he should have just set her straight right there if he had a problem with it. It was an opportunity for a "teaching moment". I also don't think he would have bothered to write the note if he stiffs waitresses all the time. People who don't tip aren't bothered the fact they don't tip, imo. I think the "boys" thing just went right over her head until someone explained it to her after she posted it. I'm sure she didn't mean anything by it.... but "guys", "fellas" anything but "boys". It's a good thing to know unless one doesn't give a rat's ass who they offend. Waitresses who rely on tips should never fall into that category, though.

Maybe I missed it but do we know how old this woman is? I mean if she's 50 or beyond I could see the "boy" thing being possible but if she's in her 20's or 30's, it seems unlikely that she was using it in that manner. It's all conjecture at this point but it is a message board so we offer incomplete opinions.

Getting mad over the term "boy" is absurd. Smells very much like an excuse to be a defensive ass and a cheapskate.

I obviously wasn't at the restaurant but I have to believe that she meant no harm with the term "boys". She likely calls all men at a table boys. And if Sapp didn't like it, how about tell her not to call them boys anymore? He's never been shy to say what he feels any other time, no matter how dickish it might be. What it boils down to is this is who Warren Sapp is...a piece of dog shit. Like many people, he will tip for outstanding service but he will constantly be looking for a reason to not tip. It's just a shame that someone who has been given so much is so angry and insufferable. I hate that prick and I swear if he's ever jay walking I won't break.

There are people all over Tampa Bay who will tell you he does this kind of shit all the time. People have been calling talk radio for 2 days not just telling their "Sapp is a prick" stories but specifically their "Sapp stiffed me on the tip" stories. I've heard 2 people in 2 days actually defend him. His buddy Booger McFarland who said he tips more often than he doesn't when they eat out (maybe because he knows Booger is a good tipper and expects it) and a valet at a club that said Sapp didn't have money at the end of the night and sent a lackey back the next night with $100. Everyone else pretty much said he's nasty, he yells at the staff, nothing is ever right with his meal, he's of course rude to autograph seekers which I understand to an extend when you're trying to eat, and after he abuses everyone he stiffs them. People were saying they hate to even see him walk through the door. He's just a douchenozzel.

Not sure in lieu was used correctly (not saying it isn't) but I agree with this post. The last sentence is true, too, with me (just substitute 20 with dime number north of 15).

I used it wrong. I try to sound smart from time to time, it failed me this time.

Anyone who tips someone for poor service is sending the wrong message. What they get paid as base salary is not my problem. That is between them and their employer. When they are serving me, the are essentially working directly for me and I expect them to do a good job.

That being said, from me excellent service gets 20-30%, good service gets 12 to 20%, average service gets 9-12%, poor service gets 5-8% and horrible/rude service gets nothing.

I agree, although It may not be 20%. Also never send back food, unless you like living dangerously.

I'll send back food but I will leave! (never go back)

By the way, anyone left out there that thinks it's ok to call a black man "boy"?
I'll do it with kids that I know - not someone I don't.

I will tip bad service but I'll be damned if I'll tip an insulting waitress.....

It's hard to pass judgment without knowing if the service was actually poor or he was just making an excuse not to tip (Warren has been in financial trouble before).

I can't feel too bad for the kind of person that would post a bill online because someone didn't tip. As far as I'm concerned, they're both assholes.

Suely Sapp is making 6 figures on TV so if he can't afford to tip on a $69 bill he's really doing somthing wrong.

The bottom line is, regardless if Sapp is an ass or not. Waiters and waitresses need to get it through their heads that they are not entitled to a tip.

And thank you for telling everyone that you have committed tax evasion. My ex-wife would routinely claim just 8% of her tips. As a CPA I am telling you that you must claim 100% of your tips, otherwise you can end up in jail.

Never committed any sort of tax evasion. Not saying I did that or would do it, just saying you can. Can understand how my original message could be confusing so just clarifying :)
