i will never understand why pitcher's bat. wainwright is paid 20 million a year to pitch. what is the purpose of sending a pitcher up to look foolish at the plate and risk injury? it isn't the stone age, when players had to work in the off season to make ends meet. the MLB is a multi-billion dollar business and teams are paying absurd money for quality pitchers. it'd be akin to NFL teams telling their QB to get out there and return kickoffs or play some defense.

Pitching is at a premium in the NL (more so than the AL) so they really shouldn't hit imo. However, anyone can get hurt regardless of what they do. Wainwright could have done the same thing throwing a pitch

You have to admit 95% of pitchers really aren't baseball players these days. They're pitching faster and more prone to injury

The AL has set the tone for the rules and the FA market. At some point, the NL will come over. It might not be this year but at some point in the next decade or so. I agree that it isnt real baseball but rules to sports always change. The hope would be that there wouldnt be a slippery slope effect with the AL always needing more offense.

I also think its dumb that this conversation is coming up with Wainwright and the fact that its being brought up by AL fans is telling.

I said it before. it is like forcing your quarterback to also be your field goal kicker

We have Wacha and Martinez that are off to good starts and can take the next step. It isn't over yet. Cards have never been defined by one player in terms of regular season success.

If you pay a player 20 million to pitch and they get hurt pitching -- they were injured doing what you paid them to do. Wainwright didn't get to the MLB because of his bat and none of the money he received from the Cards is because of his bat.

Same as the response above. If an infielder or outfielder is injured diving for a ball -- they were injured doing what you paid them to do.

What happened to Wainwright is akin to say the Tigers deciding to put Miguel Cabrera on the mound if they were getting whalloped and he blows out his arm and has to have Tommy John and miss the entire season. The difference is -- it'd be a choice to put Cabrera on the mound and the manager would get reemed. In the NL -- they make non-professional hitters get in the batters box to face professional pitchers.

I have to say I agree, but many times, they are taken out, not by choice, but because they hit their pitch limit. Today's pitchers are treated more like investments by the team, as they are paying them millions of dollars and don't want to risk an unnecessary injury by pushing them past their limits.

Plus -- today's game is light years different with the bullpens each team have. They have left handed specialists, 8th inning set up pitcher, a closer, a long reliever, etc. etc. It is a big deal if someone brings in a closer for a 4 out save, when back in the day -- closer would pitch the 8th and 9th quite often.

Not sure which Singleton you are talking about (Chris, Jon, etc.) I know which Hamilton you are talking about and he has been used many times by the reds as a 'designated runner' -- in the MLB, they call it a pinch runner though.

I'm not quite sure what is difficult to understand. You either draft an everyday player or you draft pitcher. An every day player isn't in the MLB to pitch. A pitcher isn't in the MLB to hit. The other stuff you are bringing up -- teams bring in late game defensive substitutions all the time, teams bring in pinch runners all the time.
