It would be good business if the team didn't need to use the tag on anyone. It would say they are serious about getting long term solutions done to maintain the players they want/need for the future.

I guess this is good news, but I'm not sure about any needed urgency. Do we need to free up the tag for either Oz or Malik at about $20MM and over $15 MM respectively? I've come to love DCs idea of post Malik signing Mario Williams to a team friendly one year deal. I'd much rather have him, for say, $8MM next year than Malik for $15.

Yeah I can't see any team even coming close to thinking about this. Heck if we could get a mid-1st round pick for Oz I would be pumped. Don't get me wrong I like Oz I'm just not sold on Oz being a star in this league. I also wouldn't mind seeing us go after a guy like Paxton Lynch (Elway is rumored to really like this kid) and with that have him locked up for 5-years on a team friendly deal to then spend big elsewhere.

As for Tagging Oz I just can't see Elway taking that chance. We are talking about a huge cap hit for a guy that the Broncos are rumored would barely pay that price for a 2-year period let alone for 1 season ($20 million). He would have to have a trade partner before like LA. Now I can see why LA might be interested in the fact that Fisher probably knows if he doesn't make the playoffs this year he is easily gone. They have a very solid team on both sides of the ball other than QB so yes it does make some sense but not at the price of 2 1st round picks.

Unfortunately for us as fans Elway and the FO are the type that they are willing to wait till the last minute to get deals done. They hold true to their price and tell the player that they can take it or leave it. To me the DRC deal is the perfect example. They thought they presented him with a more than fair deal right before FA started a couple of years ago. From what I understand he somewhat laughed thinking the open market would give him a lot more. Well right when FA opened they then took that offer to Talib and he accepted right away. When the FA market wasn't as kind as DRC thought it would be he tried to come back to the Broncos saying he would sign the deal and they said "sorry already moved on." Elway doesn't like to do the whole try to low ball a player and them high ball a deal and they take time to find ground in the middle. He gives a very fair price in his mind from the beginning and will only vary a little here or there.

Elway just got done speaking at the Combine. He had a few interesting pieces of information.

1) They are giving Manning 7-10 more days to make his decision. Said he talked to him last night and no decision but said that Manning's decision has no effect on what they are doing in FA.

2) They have exchanged actual offers with Von Miller and said he is encouraged by how close to the 2 sides are. He is scheduled to meet with Miller's agent again tomorrow to see where the 2 sides are at but said if they cannot agree by March 1 the FT will be used.

3) They are pushing hard to keep Malik. The 2 sides might not be as far off as some thought.

4) They want to keep Osweiler but of the 3 he seems to be the one they are not pushing as hard to keep.

5) OL is going to be a huge focus in both FA and the Draft. Schlereth actually thinks the Broncos could have as many as 4 new starters on the OL this next year.

6) The Broncos are talking to the agent of Ware and Clady tomorrow about their future with the Broncos. He is wanting both to be willing to restructure/cut their contracts from what it is right now. Have to see what happens. He for sure said he wants Ware back and emphasized that. Clady not so much.

7) Elway did say that using the Tag on Malik is not out of the picture. He did say they will not use it on Osweiler though so no more talk about tagging Osweiler.

8) Elway said they are going to let Trevathan test the open market. They would like him back but the focus is on Miller, Osweiler, and Jackson at this point.

I still think Elway has a great pulse on the market for Oz. If they signed/negotiated in public with Oz right now, it would signal the end of Manning and I think they want Peyton to announce his end with the Broncos on his terms in 7-10 days.
