Boston doesn't have enough to trade for verlander. Dodgers made big mistake taking sonny boy gray....verlander would have put Dodgers over
What??? The Dodgers didn't trade for "Sonny Boy Gray".

@dougplayer has been an embarrassment to Detroit Tiger fans for many years. He knows nothing of baseball.

i would absolutely take a flier
The bad news:
Detroit's stadium is a pitcher's park and Verlander's home/road splits are ugly. 3.29 ERA at home, 5.05 on the road. Going to a hitter's park like Fenway could be disastrous.

That flier you would absolutely take is also be a pretty expensive flier. About $9 million remaining on this year salary and another $78 million over the next three seasons. I'm certain Detroit would eat some of that...maybe $20 million. But the Red Sox would still be on the hook for $65-70 million for an aging fastball pitcher who has not pitched to the value of his contract in 3 of the last 4 years.

The good news:
Verlander is 2.51/1.05 in 5 starts since the All Star break. Maybe he has gotten his shit together. Or maybe, it is just an anomalous streak in an otherwise disappointing season.

Only way he gets the extra $22 million in 2020 is if he finishes in the top 5 in Cy Young in 2019. And if he does, $28 million is worth it. And if the Tigers eat $20 million of the guaranteed $56, whatever team he goes to is on the hook for just $36 million over 2 years.

Price can't hack the Boston pressure. He's pulling a ton of shit to get out. His biggest problem is that huge contract he signed. He's not the brightest bulb on the chandelier and has pretty much alienated the Boston fan base by going after Dennis Eckersley who refused to get sucked in. Eck is a hall of Famer, something price will only be a visitor and have to pay admission.

Verlander would be a perfect fit in Boston. Innings eater and someone who's not weak of character.

Price is basically untradeable at this point because of his elbow.

I have a feeling there's more to this Eck story, doesn't Pedroia hate Eck too?

This seems like a complete shitstorm for just saying "yuck"

Astros need to send over Beltran and Morton to offset the salary (plus a few prospects) and just get this done.

With Pedroia and Price out on DL the Red Sox have won 8 in a row. They're 3 games up on the Yanks and the team looks like they're having fun playing baseball.

Yeah, it's a pretty big opportunity. The schedule doesn't get much easier either. If they can go even 26-23, that gets them to 90 wins. I'd feel very good about making the playoffs.

Red Sox currently lead the AL with a 3.64 ERA. Their team ERA+ of 125 is even better than the 2007 squad (123).

Does 90 win the division?

Boston has enough.

but they're just not gonna trade Groome to do it.

Detroit should take an offer of something like Daz Cameron (big time upside in CF), Cionel Perez and JD Davis, plus Beltran to offset some salary, for Verlander.
