From the Buffalo News today. I would hate to see him go I feel if he had some talented line mates he's a superstar and a lot of teams would love this guy he just doesn't have the talent around him here and look at his numbers even though he has played far less games he is on par with (point wise) JMO...

Thomas Vanek knows the Sabres are in position for a rebuild. He also knows he might not be part of it.

General Manager Darcy Regier has talked during the past two days of looking toward the future, which might leave the team's leading scorer as a trade target before Wednesday's deadline.

"Every year you think about that, but obviously this year probably more than any other year because of the position we’re in and one year left on my contract," Vanek, who will miss tonight's game against Boston with an upper-body injury, said in First Niagara Center. "Obviously, you think about it, but at the same time it’s part of the business. If it happens, it happens, and we’ll move on.

"You never like to. I’ve raised my family here. I enjoy where I’m at, but I understand the situation. I’m not sure. I haven’t talked to anyone about what their plan is. Again, it’s something you can’t control. Again, if it happens, you move on and you help whatever team you move on to. If you stay here, I’ll do the same things I’ve been doing for the last eight years."

I don't know that he should be moved. Wouldn't it be nice to see them add some young talent to grow around Vanek instead? They could definitely get a lot of value in a trade, but I think that he's still young enough to survive a rebuild and make a few runs once they're built back up.

That's how I feel DC. The guy has talent that doesn't grow on trees. It's obviously frustrating for him at times when he'll make a nice play on the ice and has no support. Some people say it looks like he doesn't care at times but I don't by that, I think it's frustration and it's got to be hard for a player like him to be surrounded by second rate talent. It's a lot easier to see it at the games, he'll make a nice play in the zone and his mates go off for line changes when they shouldn't and you can see his reaction. I just feel bad for the guy.

There's no doubt in my mind that if you plug the right players in around him he would light it up.

A trade within the division? That would be tough for Darcy to do.

They are sellers and the Bruins management wants a win pretty bad after the Iggy bullshit.

I can see Chia offering up a good trade. I dont think Darcy would care much cause they are gonna have to rebuild anyways.

That's a good point. As a rental, I don't see a problem with it. Does anyone know what Vanek's contract looks like?

EDIT: I just reread the OT and saw that there's only one year on the contract.

Who would Boston give up? I't be surprised if Khoklachev, Bartkowski & a 1st round pick was enough to acquire Vanek. He's not a rental.

I'd love Vanek in a Bruins uni. I like the way he plays the game and in general seems like a class act. :suds:

I'm not sure what the Bruins cap situation is but if they got him in their line up the Bruins would be a serious threat in the playoffs. Not that they aren't now but adding him would be pretty fucking special.

Here are his numbers...Thomas Vanek NHL Salary Contract History

Keep in mind this guy has as many points as OV in five less games !

7.1 is a tough hit. He kinda is prone to getting dinged up a lot. I sure would not mind seeing him on our powerless power play though.

He gets dinged up because he's the Sabres only go to guy and the other teams just tee off on him. On the Bruins he wouldn't get all of the attention he get's here because they have way more balance. JMO.

Ya I was thinking that as well. Guy can put the puck in the net and that seems to be a issue. He would instantly help that god awful power play.

Yeah, He's got seven PPG's so he would help there a lot. I would hate to lose him but would pull for the guy if he went to the Bruins.

This year it wouldn't matter. Thomas is off the books so there's 5M.

Nathan Horton is an UFA at 4M.
Andrew Ference UFA 2.25M
Anton Khudobin UFA 875K

There you go.

I don't think trading Horton is a move that the B's would go with. Vanek needs to join the existing roster, they don't need to change the look of an already successful team.

The Sabres will need youth and picks more than anything.
