Just saw it on Netflix. I highly recommend it.

Never knew how big an impact it had on those guys. I feel really bad for them.

Fans are fucking assholes and i'm glad the league has gotten better at protecting the players rather than just blaming them, like Stern did back then.

I wasn’t aware of the seriousness of it. This happened almost 17 years ago, I lived over 3500 miles away and the internet wasn’t prevalent enough to do any real research on it.

You don’t have to be an asshat about it when people want to educate themselves.

You have been crying for years about how the Pacers were robbed of a title.

They would not have won that year. The Spurs were very good and Artest was very unstable.

SJax and O’Neal got more severe punishments and more blame than they deserved.

But Artest?

Hell no.

The fans were completely out of line. The man who threw the cup should have served jail time along with several others. But Artest probably should have too.

He ran into the stands and attacked a fan, incidentally not even the one who threw the cup. That is not alright.

He is fortunate he got to resume his NBA career at all.

My take on the whole thing is that Auburn Hills security was woefully unprepared and that is probably the single biggest cause of all of this.

The fan behavior was inexcusable and criminal in many cases.

And still, the way those 3 Pacers responded went well beyond self defense. Especially Artest.

You can make a case for SJax and O’Neal, but O’Neal especially would have had a completely different career trajectory had he not slipped when trying to punch that fan.

As wrong as the fan was, Reggie Miller was right. JO might have killed that man. Lucky for him he didn’t.

Does it show any justification for any player of any sport to run into the stands to confront a fan?

Asking him not to be an asshat might be too much.

Had no idea this existed. As soon as I read what Shaqdaddy wrote, I stopped posting and watched it.

Good show. I had no idea the idiot who started the whole thing was identified. What an asshat that guy was. Came off like he gave zero fucks about what he did. Too bad Artest got the wrong guy because it would have been great to see the instigator get his ass kicked.

I also liked that it was determined they were defending themselves. That part of the story needs to get out.

It's never a justification, but it gives a reason as to why

All the blame was given to the three Pacers players and, at the time, the NBA was so determined to keep the league relevant after the departure of MJ, that the fans were pretty much given a free pass on the whole thing.

Watching it now. My blame list right now looks like this

1) Ben Wallace
2) Jamaal Tinsley
3) Pistons security

Well worth the watch. When I coached high school ball in Portland, JO came and watched a couple games. He always said what up coach? He didn’t know me from Adam. Always liked that kid. Wish they would have elaborated more on punishment of the fans that were involved - were they banned from going to future games?

From what I can tell the only things the fans got were fines and stadium bans.

Ben Wallace?

He overreacted a bit, but he can’t be your number 1 cause.

And Artest does not even make the list?

Nope. These are all the people who could have prevented the brawl from even happening

Ok, makes sense.

I still put Piston security first though.

Would have been nothing more than a minor dust up on the court had they been prepared.
