Colin Kaepernick - QB - 49ers

CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco named Colin Kaepernick the 49ers' "offensive player of camp" for an outstanding August.

Per Maiocco, Kaepernick was "clearly the team's best offensive player," running the read option with "aplomb" and showing improved touch. Although Kap's sheer wide receiver corps is shallow and largely unimpressive, he targeted Vernon Davis and Anquan Boldin "with regularity," and they could both be 2013 target monsters. Kaepernick has as high a ceiling as any quarterback in football.

Kendall Hunter - RB - 49ers

Kendall Hunter (Achilles') is expected to make his preseason debut on Sunday against the Vikings.

Hunter came off the active/PUP list on August 10, but sat out last week's game against the Chiefs. Hunter is still less than nine months removed from partially tearing his Achilles' tendon, but has been cutting since May. He should open the season as Frank Gore's direct backup, though LaMichael James is in line for touches, as well.

Colt McCoy - QB - 49ers

CSN Bay Area left 49ers backup QB Colt McCoy off its most recent 53-man roster projection.

McCoy has struggled his way through the preseason and camp, prompting the 49ers to sign used-up veteran Seneca Wallace. Injury prone and prone to throwing at his receivers' feet, McCoy could be running out of time in the league.

Although I never thought McCoy to be a badass or anything, my initial reaction to the Niners trading for him was that we were receiving a decently accurate and mobil QB that just didn't have the monster arm.... bottom line was that we may have found a great backup to Colin. I'm somewhat surprised he is sucking out loud as badly as he has.

Marcus Lattimore - RB - 49ers

49ers placed RB Marcus Lattimore (knee surgeries) on the reserve/PUP list.

In Lattimore and Mario Manningham (PUP, knee surgery), the 49ers will have two options to activate for in-season depth. Most signs still point to Lattimore spending the entire year on reserve/PUP, but we wouldn't rule him out just yet. The Niners' minds could change if Lattimore progresses as scheduled and one of their current top-three running backs suffers an early-season injury.

LaMichael James - RB - 49ers

After rushing nine times for 15 yards, 49ers RB LaMichael James exited Sunday night's third preseason game with an elbow injury.

He won't return, but the Niners deemed him "questionable," suggesting James avoided serious injury. Through three preseason affairs, James has carried 22 times for 59 yards (2.68 YPC). James has been a disappointment through one NFL season and two camps, failing to earn a significant role in Jim Harbaugh's offense. He's the No. 3 back behind Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter.

Anquan Boldin - WR - 49ers

Anquan Boldin was held catch-less in the 49ers' third preseason game Sunday night against Minnesota.

Although Boldin will likely finish the preseason with two catches for 14 yards, reports out of Niners camp were that he was Colin Kaepernick's go-to guy in the passing game, along with Vernon Davis. We still don't anticipate a huge jump off last year's regular season numbers, when Boldin ranked 31st among fantasy receivers. He'll likely be a low-ceiling WR3 in 2013.

Vernon Davis - TE - 49ers

Vernon Davis caught two passes for 21 yards in the 49ers' third preseason game Sunday night.

He'll finish preseason with three receptions for 33 yards, assuming the Niners don't play their starters in the exhibition finale. Considering how little Jim Harbaugh has used his first-team group in the first three games, that would be a surprise. Davis is poised for a huge fantasy year as the No. 1 or 2 target in Colin Kaepernick's passing game.

Marlon Moore - WR - 49ers

49ers WR Marlon Moore caught three passes for 32 yards in Sunday night's preseason game against the Vikings.

It's time to start taking Moore seriously in re-draft leagues, not as a draft pick necessarily but putting him on the radar. He's started each of San Francisco's first three preseason games at "X" receiver, and Colin Kaepernick has the talent to elevate the performance of players around him. Through three preseason contests, Moore has four receptions for 44 yards, playing sparingly with the rest of San Francisco's first-team group.
