i really dont think we have to wait til 2017. i think the flyers could have a real good shot next year. this year they're still a little to inconsistent, but next year they can go in with a normal offseason, have a normal regular season, all the young guys will be a year better.

With the progression of Luke Schenn, as well as the other younger guys, we are ceraintly set to improve even if Homer sits on his hands this offseason. (I'm not holding my breath, of course.)

We are good enough, and that is one of the three factors that the one Stanley Cup winner has every year. If we can stay healthy and get the hot goalie at the right time, we are set.

And fuck, guys, we could win it all this year. Let's go! :D

Gabbo a goner? - The Hockey News

Daniel Briere wants to remain a Philadelphia Flyer, but that hasn't put an end to the trade rumors swirling about him lately.

Sportsnet's Brian Lawton claimed the Nashville Predators and Phoenix Coyotes would be very interested in Briere. This comes on the heels of speculation the Boston Bruins and St. Louis Blues were also looking at the 35-year-old.

Briere began his NHL career with the Coyotes, but the constant uncertainty over their future in Phoenix rules them out as a serious candidate for his services.

Though some observers believe Briere might waive his no-movement clause to play for a Stanley Cup contender, he was quite insistent about his desire to stay with the Flyers.

It's all about who gets hot. I can see him going on an awesome streak and us winning. I never thought Chicago would win with Niemi but they did. Not every Stanley Cup winner has a Jonathan Quick caliber goalie.

I truly believe Chcago won with Niemi only because they were playing us with Leighton.

I was talking about the Flyers roster with some buddies last night. They seem to think there is no way Homer can keep both B. Schenn and Coots on this team in the future. They had lots of reasons. First, we have a log jam at the center position (G, Schenn, Cooter, Briere, Laughton). They think that Cooter will get ripped off and wasted by not getting second line minutes because of that log jam. They also think that we have too much money tied up in offense and not enough left for D. Lastly, they think that getting rid of one of them is the only way we will ever be able to get our coveted #1A Dman we desperately need.

What are your guys thoughts on this??

sort of like jordan staal in pitt. one guy is going to suffer because of the log jam. though i am hoping we can just move on from briere and let those 3 grow along with laughton.

the flyers never seem to think this out, i know that center is the overall best hockey player on the ice and they like to draft that way. but we need scorers, snipers actually. the value for both is high, i actually think couterier is higher on the trade market.

But does there become a point where the growth becomes stunted because of the logjam? Cooter needs to play with highly skilled talent to be able to grow offensively. That won't happen if he's stuck on the third line. There doesn't seem to be an easy answer here.

the answer would be to move one to wing, but that has never worked here for a long time. richards, carter, giroux, schenn, couterier, briere all thrive in the middle.

Agreed, they are all at their best at center and wasted on the wing so what do we do?

I agree one would have to go to aquire a top defenseman but the problem is which one. I would hate to let cooter go and him turn into a star, but if i HAD to trade one it would be Cooter nooo Schenn noooo Cooter noooo Schenn oh i dont know thats homers job

at some point you have to trade one of them. for a winger or a dman. even if they are growing how they're supposed to, you'll never be able to afford a top 3 of giroux, schenn, and couturier if that growth continues

i disagree that they're spending 'too much' on forwards though

4.25mil / 3.75 mil / 4.2 mil
3.11mil / 6.5 mil / 1.75 mil
3.5 mil / 1.375 mil / 900k
1.75 mil / 1.75 mil / 544k

that's really not bad at all.. those are pretty close ballpark numbers for our healthy forward crew.. you're gunna be hard pressed to find a more 'bang for your buck' lineup in the league

the problem is they dont get consistent value for any of their dmen now that timonen is starting to fall apart

6.3 mil / 3.6 mil
4.5 mil / 3.5 mil
4 mil / 900k

plus pronger's 4.9 mil for nothing.

with a healthy d-corp..you might be hard pressed to find a 'least bang for your buck' d-corp in the league

i still think they're way better than they are playing though. they're just playing like garbage every other game this season

Well, I wish we could win a Cup in the next few years while they're all here but I don't how likely that is.

I agree with you but I also think that they're talking about the future when all of our young talent gets pay raises. Not sure how Homer can afford it.

the only way to truly sustain a competitive team is to have guys on ELCs.. they won't be able to keep giroux, schenn, couturier, read, simmonds, and voracek because those guys will get raises.. you have to hope cousins, laughton, maybe noebels, can come in and make a difference.. the problem is, outside of noebels who is mostly considered a reach, they flyers prospects project to be grinder/checking type players.. cousins may surprise because i dont think anyone expected him to have the year he's been having.. but he also might go to prison..

giroux can't do it on his own.. and even if you can keep giroux, voracek, hartnell, and schenn (assuming G and voracek get massive raises, you might not be able to keep much more).. that won't be enough scoring depth unless G and Voracek plan on putting up 100+ points per season.. absolutely need to find some guys in the draft or have guys in the system exceed offensive expectations

Whatever move is made I just hope it makes sense for us now and down the road. Homer is saying the right things but I believe it when I see it though.

I don't expect any blockbusters but I don't want a Kubina or Matt Walker type deal either.
