flyers will be just fine.
This team is set up to be a contender for many years.

agreed.. when you look at the contracts the flyers have right now, there really isn't any one of them that are really aggregious.. briere's can be argued, but if you buy him out, there really isn't a player on the roster that is drastically under-performing his salary.. when you want to have a talented team, you run up against it like this

edit: and obviously pronger's is a serious problem, but i dont think you guys want me to go there anymore :)

The Summer of 2014, when the Holy Triad hits RFA, you're having Meszaros off the books as well. By the point Gustaffson may have developed into a Top 4 guy, and at that point Gostisbehere will just be breaking into professional hockey (He certainly we be a lock for the Flyers out of college.)

So there is $10million. Giroux is going to eat anywhere from $4-6million of that, with the Flyers still needing raises to Couturier, Read, and Schenn, while also replacing two Top 4 guys (Because Kimmo is certainly going to hit the wall hard by the end of his tenure here.)

they're not necessarily in a bad situation.. they're in the situation that every team ends up in when they have a lot of talented youngsters.. those contracts expire and all those kids get raises

right now they have 62 mil comitted to the cap next year (64.3 mil cap)

hartnell.giroux.voracek
simmonds.schenn.briere
talbot.couturier.read
mcginn.

timonen.schenn
coburn.grossmann
mesz.gervais
bourdon
pronger

bryz

are all included in that. so you need 2-4th liners and a backup goalie for 2 mil, if you don't do anything else, and don't use pronger's LTIR.. not a stretch to say laughton can/will make the team next year (1.1 mil), sign a backup goalie for 900k.. dip in to pronger's LTIR (though not advisable, can be done) for your last forward (cousins - 900k?)..

personally, i dont think theres any way around buying out briere.. then you have plenty of room, and can upgrade gervais by either resigning gus (cant cost much more than 2-ish) or going after someone else.. if you go that route, you still have 3 mil under the cap + pronger's LTIR

next summer is where chaos hits.. giroux, schenn, and couturier are all RFA and read is UFA.. you do lose timonen's 6 mil though.. plus its not unrealistic to assume 3 mil in a cap increase.. still no way to keep giroux, schenn, couturier, and read though without trading away some salary.. you're looking at ~12 mil between the leftover from briere's buyout, timonen's 6, and a cap increase, to sign 4 budding stars.. not gunna happen

still, having cousins, laughton, and hopefully gostisbehere, and hopefully a 1st round pick from this year on ELC's will help them fill out the roster in 2 years

I dont see anywhere in here that says that we buy out Bryz. do you think we are gonna keep him for 8n more years?

forgot about mezzy, so that's good too

i think giroux will get 7-7.5 though, and that's if we see salaries regress a little because of the cap dip, which we may not

i think the best approach would be to sign couturier/schenn to conctracts that get them to UFA (2 years each i think), because then they get the big contract afterwards, but you can keep the cap hit low on them.. it's risky, but it basically signs you up for a 4 year window (including this year) to make it happen

the way bryz is playing right now, i have no problem w/ his cap hit. i can only think of 2 really soft goals so far this season and one was in the sens game this weekend, and it was the only one he gave up. he can give up soft goals any time he wants, if it's the only goal he gives up during the game.

currently, i see no reason to buy bryz out this summer. however, in 2014 when choas hits, that adds some massive flexibility. i would consider it then.

the flyers really have a lot of options and flexibility, i'm really not very concerned about trying to keep the core intact. they can either buyout briere and bryz to keep them, or they can trade one of them for a great return. the only thing i dont think they're in a position to do, is acquire a grade A talent. improvements have to come from within IMO. or they have to give up a big piece to get a big piece.

I wonder if Homer tries to get Schenn and Couturier on discount 1 year deals after their current ELCs, and gives them a higher raise in 2015 when Briere is up. Again, it is still pretty risky. (And that is the offseason that Ryan signs with the Flyers, too. Wont be easy)

Of course, this plan is shot if Briere is bought out or traded.

read my mind.
I think we keep him this year and next and then buy him out.
I also think we may do the same with Briere.

This of course is if we dont really shit the bed and miss the playoffs this season. If that happens all bets are off.

^ Folks, this.

I love Bryzgalov, but I am prepared for his doomsday come Summer 2014. It just makes so much sense. For one year or two we will roll with an okay starter for much cheaper, and then (If progression continues) Flyers' Goaltending Prospect Tony Stolarz takes the reigns, and leads the Flyers to the 2017 Stanley Cup Final where we finally beat the powerhouse Oilers, albeit 30 years late.

i think that's the play too. this summer the flyers aren't in a dire situation. they might have to get a little creative with the cap, but there is certainly no need for a big move.

they have this summer and next summer to buy people (briere/bryz) out.

the big question here is does anyone on here believe we can win the stanley cup with bryz as our starting goalie... i for one dont think we do so in my mind keeping him for another year would just be wasting another year with no cup.

i really dont think we have to wait til 2017. i think the flyers could have a real good shot next year. this year they're still a little to inconsistent, but next year they can go in with a normal offseason, have a normal regular season, all the young guys will be a year better.

It's all about who gets hot. I can see him going on an awesome streak and us winning. I never thought Chicago would win with Niemi but they did. Not every Stanley Cup winner has a Jonathan Quick caliber goalie.

the way bryz is playing currently, i do think the flyers could win a cup with him as the goalie.

if there is a definite upgrade that can be had, you go for it obviously. but stanley cup caliber goalies don't grow on trees. most that have proven capable make as much, or more, than bryz. any that people expect are right on the cusp of that level will cost an arm and a leg to acquire. and any that are 'cheap' enough to acquire will still need a little time to develop.
