Now that gust got hurt we may go for Whitney

that article lost me when they said Petry would be a solid 4th dman on a defense corps full of third pairing defense men.

now i know our defense is not filled with top pair guys but i mean, gervais/lilja/gus are the only ones that you would consider 3rd pairing types.

Yeah, that had me scratching my head as well.

Rumor Season....Plus updates on McDonald and Steen | TrueHockey

"While the rumor mill is fun it’s often more fantasy than reality. As is the case with the Blues and Flyers rumored to be discussing a trade that would’ve sent Danny Briere to St. Louis in exchange for budding star Kevin Shattenkirk.

When you consider Briere is 35 and his best days are behind him and Shattenkirk is 22 and has a chance to be great it makes zero sense for the Blues.

Shattenkirk leads the NHL in scoring among D-men and will be eventually signing an extension with St. Louis. The two sides kicked around numbers before the lockout and will eventually resume talks at some point. That could wait until after the season.

Shattenkirk has arbitration rights and when you see some of these contracts recently handed out he appears to be in position to collect north $3 Million a year from the Blues.

When you compare Shattenkirk to a number of young D-men who’ve recently signed his numbers compare favorably.

Look no further than Cam Fowler, Tyler Myers, Victor Hedman, John Carlson, and Luke Schenn just to name a few. I’ll have more on this at a later date.

The Blues could use some depth defensively and one can assume Armstrong is exploring all possibilities. Toronto, Winnipeg, Phoenix, and San Jose are just a couple of teams who could be looking to unload a D-man or two. A team now has the ability to take back salary which could allow St. Louis to take on a contract they typically would have little interest in.

A Blues source laughed when I ran the Briere for Shattenkirk rumor out of Philly past him."

Fucking dumb to put him there in the first place, there's no way he wasn't claimed. Why not put Foster there instead? Well at least we can all look forward to Homer either re-signing Shitty or overpaying another heavyweight to come in and sit in the press box. Sestito was a keeper in my mind(especially at his paycheck) he was big, strong, hit, would stand up for his team mates & was getting the whole playing on the edge but not over thing down.

I don't think Briere gave up on extra money. He got a lot because of the market that year. There was competition for him and that's what it took to lock him up. Look at Gomez's contract. I don't think Briere would've gotten any more than what we gave him.

I should clarify; I'm not saying he turned down an extra 2 million or anything a year somewhere else for a NMC, but either we could have signed him without it at the same price (in which case we screwed up and should have done so), or we couldn't have (in which case we traded a NMC for some amount of cap space).

It'd be monumentally stupid to throw in an NMC just because why the hell not.

Because nobody would claim Foster. I wonder if this wasn't us jettisoning a contract to make room for another move? Would be interesting.

Got bored, and gave this a shot. I was intentionally generous with any signed contract (Minus the big signing, a former Hart winner in his prime could fetch that coin on the open market) Pronger and Briere are compliance bought out.

FORWARDS
Scott Hartnell ($4.750m) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / Corey Perry ($9.000m)
Jakub Voracek ($4.250m) / Brayden Schenn ($3.110m) / Wayne Simmonds ($3.975m)
Simon Gagne ($3.000m) / Sean Couturier ($1.375m) / Matt Read ($0.900m)
Tye McGinn ($0.775m) / Maxime Talbot ($1.750m) / Harry Zolnierczyk ($1.000m)
Eric Wellwood ($1.000m) /
DEFENSEMEN
Kimmo Timonen ($6.000m) / Luke Schenn ($3.600m)
Braydon Coburn ($4.500m) / Nicklas Grossmann ($3.500m)
Bruno Gervais ($0.825m) / Andrej Meszaros ($4.000m)
Erik Gustafsson ($1.750m) /
GOALTENDERS
Ilya Bryzgalov ($5.667m)
Jason Labarbera ($1.250m)
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $67,026,667; BONUSES: $2,800,000
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $73,333

So if this offseason you guys are interested in gunning for the Cup, and preparing for the massive shit storm that is Cap Hell, all while being impatient with Bobby Ryan's Exodus to Philadelphia in 2015, here you go.

EDIT: Gagne was not generous enough. Shit.

That's a good looking team, but I think McGinn has earned at least a 3rd line spot and therefore either Gagne or Read(possibly both depending on where we are come trade deadline) will be gone. On a side note if we are out I really hope DB waives his NMC and we can send him to a western contender for a kings ransom considering what BUF got for Gaustad last year.

If Homer is dumb enough to let Read go for the sake of McGinn then I just might have to stop watching the Flyers for a while.
