You know that the NFL has a salary cap limiting the maximum amount of money a team can pay its players in a given year. In 2017, the cap was $167 million. The 2018 cap will be set before the new league year on March 14. What you might not know is that the cap is not necessarily the same for every team in a given year. That’s because unspent cap room from the previous year is rolled over to the next. So if a team ended the 2017 season $20 million under the cap, they’d have an extra $20 million to spend in 2018.

If Kerrigan stays and plays this year the team has 12M less to spend in free agency next year.

If Kerrigan is cut or traded without the team agreeing to pay any part of his current salary to his new team, then Washington will have 12M more to spend in free agency next year provided they don't spend the savings this year.

The gain to D.C. is greater flexibility next year and not some random player. Chase Young is the replacement for Kerrigan this year, so signing someone with that savings is not necessary. Who they sign with that additional money a year from now is anybody's guess but they will have it to spend on improving the team

You seem to completely misunderstand that we rollover 36 million instead of 24 million (minus future expenditures in both cases) into next season’s cap, increasing the size of the cap available for us.

Because you have 1A & 1B in Young and Sweat. Kerrigan is a luxury at this point (backup) and makes far too much money for a backup. Honestly, he should restructure or be traded to a contender at this point.

Rolling over monies unspent is NOT double dipping. Let us at minimum agree that money unspent can and certainly will be rolled over/ added to next year's salary cap.

Next year Kerrigan will be off of the books therefore, unless a new deal is struck, a projected amount intended to cover his current salary will be in next year's budget. (Basically his contract has expired)

The obvious answer is... None!

I'm certain that a brief scroll back will reveal the initial point, that being, a 12 million dollar saving that comes with releasing or my preference, trading him is far more valuable than keeping him.

The team is in full rebuild mode. Ron Rivera's initial push is aimed at building depth. Saving that 12M serves two purposes.

1 It gives the team more flexibility this year (important part follows >) in the event that they wish to target current or future free agents. Maybe they'll use some of the money to redo Schreff's contract this year or not.

2. Unspent, it also gives the team more flexibility next year, when they are targetting free agents and/or desiring to re-sign their own free agents.

Now, I'll add my perspective, which is trading him. A move like this in addition to the two listed above, adds that player that you asked about. This player, while not guaranteed to be a good one, offers something that Kerrigan, even on a redone contract simply cannot. He would be younger and far less expensive.
