I thought Mattison was going to retire after his contract was up this year. But hey. Can’t blame him to want a DC position. But also, our defenses were only average under him when he was our DC under Hoke. He’s also 70. Sooo...

I’d like him to stay, as he has been apart of so many teams at UM. But truthfully, the defense is on Don Brown. Mattison coached the DL, so tough for someone to pass up an opportunity to be a DC again.

I wish him the best, but for OSU fans, I wouldn’t expect a whole lot, as he won’t be coaching that much longer, as he is in his 70’s. He will definitely help out your DL though.

As far as Washington — I’ve heard rumors, but nothing for sure on it. I think he would be a bigger loss than Mattison because of his recruiting chops.
Washington is the one who had the lead for Daxton Hill and also the guy who had Harrison ready to commit to UM until OSU curb stomped us.

Michigan was 23rd in S&P+ in 2011, 29th in 2012, 50th in 2013 and 13th in 2014 under Mattison. I thought the 2011-2012 and 2014 defenses were good, though 2013 was pretty meh. I think he did a great job as a DL coach.

I think Mattison will only be here a year or two.

They gave him the "Co-DC" tag with Jaff Hafley (DB Coach from 49ers) who they also just hired.

I'd expect him to "groom" Hafley I guess you could call it. Hafley is well thought of from what I read.
