If they are actually trying to work out a contract, that is significant. That means they are mutually trying to work something out and it is not just the 49ers kicking the tires on a free agent. There was a lot of that last year with Walter Thurmand, Emmanual Sanders, and others
Its nothing major yet. Other teams are still on him. I think Smith wants to see what kind of offer 49ers offer. Not getting too excited yet.

Getting Baltimore's old WR'S would at least stabilize the corps and bring wrs in that play hard nose and take on that killer mentality if it happens I still draft strong

Let do it. We need an enthusiastic WR that wants to runaround a lot.

Its close to be a done deal they are reporting. Between 8-9 million a year.

Strong Mutual Interest Between 49ers & WR Torrey Smith | NFL Trade Rumors -

After looking at T. Smith Im not upset with this move. At first I was. But then found out he is only 25/26 years old. The kid adds a deep threat to this team that we need. He gives us the Big play threat. Im not thrilled about 8-9 mill a year but if you look at his age and what he brings it isn't that bad. i would rather have him then Crabtree.

Question is now if we do sign him what do we do with our 1st pick? Do we still go WR or go CB?

Now if we don't sign him please get rid of this thread. Thank you
That would be my question as well. With T.Smith and Simpson on the team the 9ers might be looking elsewhere in the draft . That worries me a whole lot.

I agree, I wouldn't mind Waynes in the 1st and then in the 2nd rd draft WR.

I still hope the go WR and go all in at WR. Ellington, Patton, Boldin, Smith and simpson and 1st rd pick.

That is what the scouting reports I've read have ben saying. Not a true number 1. He does fill a need as the 49ers don't have a receiver that can stretch a defense. I am just wondering whether he is worth the cost, assuming we ink him. I am also wondering why Baltimore isn't interested in resigning him if indeed he signs with SF. Baltimore obviously didn't think he was worth that money

Baltimore also traded away Boldin and we saw how that worked out for us. Ozzie Newsome is a great GM but they have their own priorities and cap issues that they need to work out just like us. Example being we like Iupati but not for the money he wants and we have Brandon Thomas who could fill in.

That might be the case, but with Torrey Smith this at least allows the team to not HAVE to draft a WR. It now lets them go with the best guy rather than drafting need. If the top 3 WR are all gone we're not forced to draft Strong or DGB that high and can instead trade down or go with a Corner, lineman, or whatever. DGB might have the talent, but gambling he'll stay out of trouble, actually not bust and turn into a great WR year 1 would've been a big risk have the season ride on. Torrey Smith is ready now and he fills the need we have most.

Well Stevie will be cut for sure unless somehow we can get him down 2-3 million. Thats the only way we could have Boldin, Torrey and Stevie. I wonder when Justin Smith will say if he is officially gonna retire? If he does that saves us 4 million. Dahl and Jonathan Martin can save the team 2 million. Brooks can save 4 million but not until june 1st.

what would a rookie at 15th overall cost, 4 years at $17M?

IF Torrey isn't a #1 WR, able to run ALL routes, can't help wonder if this is a good idea? Granted a rookie would take a year if not two, to REALLY be good. But he'd be an all around WR, not just a deep threat. This is important since Boldin isn't likely to be around?

if we're just looking for a 'deep threat', we could get one round 2, maybe round 3?

If they project Torrey to become a true #1, then forget this post entirely. :-)

He's probably worth 6-7 mil a year. I like too many college WR prospects this year to spend that kind of money on Torrey, but it could be worse.

I agree. Thats a lot of money to pay just to try and take the top off a defense. Unless they really are getting rid of the Harbaugh project and bringing in a QB who can gives us a true passing game? This is getting interesting.

The negative?

Smith has not been consistent. He has caught more than 50 passes only once in his career -- the 65 he had for 1,128 yards in 2013 -- and is coming off a career-low 49 catches while being tied for second with 11 drops.

Many question his route running and hands in the clutch.

Hey, wait a sec.......

From what limited amount I've read about T. Smith, his skill set would align more with Kap's strengths.

With Willis retiring that opens up money for more moves not that they wanted to make them because of that. Also Smith hasn't made the choice to retire yet.

I don't think he is a number one but that is ok. We can draft our #1. Parker, DGb or Strong.

Yeah, we are just SO good at drafting WR. NOT. I like taking torrey, a proven WR rather than let the FO blunder again.

Very happy about this pick up. I called around 7-8 mill a year and we got him at 8 mill. Very good move by the 49ers
