Okay, thought I was done, I wasn't...

It's intriguing to me that Toews misses out on some of criticism that Sid does...I think they have extremely similar personalities both on and off ice. Again: winners are immediately regarded as leaders. He's the captain, he gets the accolades. Nothing wrong with that, but it's a simplistic way of looking at a team. You need a combination of leaders. Anyway...I think I'm done now.

If you read this^ in a whiny Crosby voice, it's quite funny. ;)

As a Red Wings fan didn't you watch the same thing happen to Toews in the series against Detroit just two years ago? He looked and acted frustrated as hell that entire series, but because the Blackhawks ended up winning the series in 7 anyway no one said shit about his "lack of composure" or the fact that he had only 1 goal and was a -3.

Actually, I did not give Toews a free pass. In fact, as a Wings fan I relished in it. When your underdog team can frustrate of the opposition's leader, you're mentally dominating them. One difference between Toews and Crosby though is that it's a trend with Crosby.

I guess I'm just spoiled watching elite ultra-professional team leaders in Yzerman, Lidstrom and Zetterberg captain my team for the past 30 years.

Mike Vernon:wtf2:

and Al MacInnis? Who aside from opposing goalies didn't like Chopper?

I have always disliked Calgary, those two and one other mostly.

I can't remember the third one's name, but he was one of their main offensive players in the late 80's early 90's.

Yep, because he's definitely the only player that's ever slashed a guy on the wrist while he had the puck.

Hell, it's pretty easy to find clips of guys slashing players in worse places who don't have the puck and completely behind the play. But because their victims weren't hurt and weren't Mario Lemieux they're nice clean guys I guess.

Actually, slashing the great Whinio could have redeemed him in my eyes. If that was all he'd ever done, it wouldn't be enough. But I've seen him play in person quite a few times and nearly every shift, as soon as the ref looked away, he was face washing, slashing, or crosschecking anyone who wouldn't hit back. Notorious cheap shot artists like Peter Bondra and Calle Johansen, so maybe he was just paying them back.

There was an astronomical amount of hype about Crosby since he was a young teen. The hype train gained momentum when he entered the league and played well. Hype clouds vision and influences the weak minded.

I liken it to boy bands. They're adored by young impressionable weak-minded girls. Ask them why they like that music and they do not have a truly legitimate answer. It's "I don't know, I just like it" or "they're cute" (completely irrelevant to their music) or if they're more honest and self-aware it's "because my friends do".

To be clear, I think Crosby is an elite hockey player, but to emphatically exclaim him the unquestioned best is quite irritating.

You've got my curiosity. What advanced metrics do you have that proves his elite proficiency when the puck is not on his stick?

Interesting. People say that about Zetterberg, too, but we don't hear his name even whispered among the "best". Tell ya what, when you supply those fancy advanced metrics, match them side-by-side with Zetterberg's so I can see how much better of an all-around hockey player Crosby is than Zetterberg.

If you consider over .500 FO% above average, you're right. If you rate him in relation to other top-line centers in the league, he's average.

I argue that he should not be so clearly labeled "the best", he should be labeled "one of the best". It is very debatable.

Here's the list of centres in the entire NHL in 2013-14 with a FO% better than Crosby and more than 70 points (a standard which Crosby exceeded by almost 50%)

Thornton
Pavelski
Kopitar
Giroux

The last two he was even within 1% of... basically the difference between Crosby and Kopitar in the faceoff dot was a little less than 15 faceoffs over his entire season, or about one faceoff every 5 and a half games. Hell, even the difference between him and Thornton was less than a faceoff per game. Just not really a big deal. Even if you lower the point standard to 60 and let Bergeron's elite percentage in the party we're still only talking about less than 1.4 faceoffs per game. Faceoffs are important, especially certain individual ones. But really they're just another battle for possession... those types of battles happen a lot more frequently between the whistles than they do after them. And all of the data shows that possession of the puck isn't much of a problem for the Penguins with Crosby out there.

Dragon, give it up. No amount of debate is going to change anything. Truth is, Crosby never did live up to the hype that was placed upon him (only 2 players ever did in the modern era). Somehow that puts him in the list of the 10 most hated players in all of history. :L

Not a fan of seeing "hated", "hate" or "hatred" thrown around. Too strong a set of words when talking about the game we all love or life in general. A visit to Auschwitz and Birkenau also helps with that perspective.

Let's settle for "Despised".

6. Avery

Most of the guys Don Cherry loves also deserve special mention.

It would've helped if his GM hadn't forgotten how to GM after he won a Cup.

Could not agree more. If there was going to be a goalie on my list, Ron would be my choice.

And as for Mr. Hextall, I've got two words for ya:

Felix.

Potvin.

too bad Roy and hextall never had a chance to duke it out
