I think the voting will be closer than most think, but in the end @HammerDown boy goes home.

I don't know, I feel like both players are over-rated here... Tony Gwynn might have been one of the best all around hitters in baseball history, but the lack of power, makes him more of a top of the order guy...

This matchup is actually the most interesting, because these are two very similar players... Both players were very good in the BA category, with the edge to Gwynn, neither were known to be power hitters(edge Clemente)...

Clemente's ideal lineup position is 3 while Gwynn is a 2. And I see gwynn being a much better 2 than clemente a 3...

Which makes me give the edge to Gwynn offensively... But Clemente is one of the best defensive RF of all time, while gwynn was barely above average...

Since I feel the defensive edge is larger than the offensive edge, I am going to give the win to clemente...

But again, I have these 2 players in my over-rated list...

The really interesting thing here, I think, is that Clemente was an also-ran for his first 5 seasons. But when he "figured it out", forgetabouit...

On the other hand, Gwynn was pretty much Tony Gwyn from day one, and he stayed there.

I gotta go Clemente here, though. 8 OPS+ seasons of 140+ vs 4.

Clemente was still playing at a very high level up until his death. He had aged pretty well.

This was probably the toughest vote for me. Gwynn was one of my favorites (never saw Clemente play). I ended up going with Clemente, I think his defense was better than Gwynn's.

This vote wouldn't even be close if Roberto Clemente hadn't perished so tragically.

I don't know. Gwynn is still good. I think he might still hold his own.

But you are probably right. Clemente was something special.

Quite possibly more universally loved than Tony Gwynn (and that's saying something)!

I think you misinterpreted his statement. He wasn't saying "if Clemente had not died tragically he would have put this out of reach", he was saying "if Clemente had not died tragically his career wouldn't be as highly regarded by people".

At least I think that's what he was saying
