this is closer than you would think... I don't like comparing pre 1900 players with modern baseball, but John McGraw has one of the best career OBPs of all time... And that is my favourite stat for a non power guy... George Brett definitely had more power than McGraw(even if McGraw played modern- since he is only 5'7)...

The stat that I just couldn't look past, is the fact john McGraw only had 4940 PA that is only 308 PA per season(16 seasons) while Brett had 11625 PA with an average of 554 PA per season in 21 seasons...

That is just way to significant not to give the win to Brett...

Thats why I tend to ignore all early guys. There was little to no structure to the game at the time, so nothing can be relied on. I dont even trust the numbers.

If you were to compare McGraw to Jim Presley (to make an extreme comparison), I likely would go with Presley since we know exactly what we are getting with him.
