Scherzer actually allows fewer hits, but they're practically tied. And fewer walks. And his K/BB is higher, which is a sign of dominance. They're extremely close right now. Too close to definitively pick one. Plus, Hernandez, Kuroda and Sale are right there too. The last month is really going to make the difference.

Yep it is close indeed. By the way. Scherzer 117 hits, Yu 110 hits, Scherzer 191 Avg against, Yu 189 Avg against

Well kuroda's advanced numbers don't match the ERA
That's pretty fair. His xFIP is solid but unspectacular and his BABIP is pretty low. His WHIP is still great, and his BAA/OBPA/SLGA/OPSA are all good. He keeps the ball in the park despite pitching in Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park, Camden Yards and Rogers Centre a disproportionate number of times per year.

Plus I don't think Kuroda is this good. And it does kind of skew things for me a little
You don't think he's "this good"? What does that even mean? This is his 2nd year dominating the AL East.

Well, they haven't pitched the same number of innings, so you can't go by total hits. Scherzer has an eyelash lead in H/9.

Well kuroda's advanced numbers don't match the ERA

His ERA has been lower than his FIP for 3 straight years. He pitches in a BandBox.
He is just better than Inducing weaker Contact than other pitchers.

He should get credit on that. Hence my dislike for humping FIP. Strikeouts and Walks are not the only Outcome, all the other outcomes are not 100% Luck.

His .268 BABIP is only .14 points lower than his Career .280 Mark. 8 Points off his Career LOB.

Darvish hasn't been in league enough for Compare career Marks. But he is benefiting from a even lower BABIP. and only 2 points higher on the LOB than Kuroda

It comes down to Home Run Rates. They both pitch in HR favorable Parks. Maybe Kuroda has some luck. But damn if I'm gonna mark it against him for giving up too little Homers.

I know how those stats work. I'm just saying darvish has more ks and a better era than scherzer he also allows less hits..

I get that, but there are important stats where Scherzer has a pretty healthy lead on Darvish too. Darvish allows more baserunners because he gives up more walks so there's that. He gives up an OBP of .265 to Scherzer's league leading(by quite a bit) .240. Nobody is running away with any of the stats and Scherzer is right there in the mix for most of the "important" ones. If the season ended today, like it or not, that 18-1 would do the talking and I don't think it would be particularly close. There are what 7 or so starts left for all of these guys ? A lot could happen over that time and a handful still have a shot.

I would still take darvish over any those other 2

Of course you would. He is your guy. If I were a Ranger fan. Id say the same thing.

However Sale is just Nasty, Less K's but less Walks. Which lets him get deeper into some games. For Me, its a Coin toss. Give me whoever. I'll be happy, and I'll defend them as the best if either was on my team.

Now Sale has that whole Inverted W thing going on...which tips the scales for longevity. But that's another story for another time.

I think today's game was a nice win for Scherzer. Up against Matt Harvey of the Mets -- He goes 6 innings, gives up 0 runs and had 11 strikeouts.

Record is up to 19-1 and ERA is down to 2.71

Sale and Max also play in a much weaker hitting division than Darvish..Felix...and even Kuroda...seeing weaker hitters twice as much tends to accent your numbers....

if anyone doesn't think Kershaw is a runaway winner in the NL...then you are immediately elminated from any Cy Young discussions because, you sir, do not know baseball.

Sounds like an exaggeration...

The 4 divisional rivals for Detroit (obviously can't include Detroit since Scherzer doesn't face his own team) has averaged 533 runs this year.

The 4 divisional rivals for Texas have averaged 549 runs this year

So the difference is a mere 16 runs a game/team...slightly better offensive opponents for Darvish, sure, but it's not like he's consistently facing the 1927 Yankees and Scherzer's facing the 1962 Mets.

Yeah and you'd have to look at more than just what division they're in. You have to look at who they've actually pitched against. The numbers are probably out there somewhere. For instance the White Sox have the worst hitting team in the AL and they're in the ALC but both Darvish & Max have pitched against them twice. Darvish has also faced Houston and Seattle a total of 7 times. I'm not saying Darvish hasn't pitched against tougher competition on average but you have to actually look at the games not just say the ALC is a weaker hitting division than the west therefore Darvish has faced tougher competition.

Texas is doing everything they can to eliminate Felix from the discussion. This may be a 2 horse race now.

And this is why you let the entire season play out.

why would you leave out todays game? now that didn't make sense at all, especially since the Tigers game was over well before you posted this?

Because it'll show whether there's bias towards the pick....if he would've chosen Darvish before today's game, then it's clear that Darvish being a Ranger is heavily influencing the pick rather than the overall body of work (which before today's games, favored Scherzer).
