I understand and acknowledge Milk’s complaint about the focus on the old-timers, but these two are just OMG good. Fewer teams, color barrier, playing against farmers and grocery clerks are all legit arguments against, though.
This post may have swayed me away from Hornsby and towards Wagner as my next vote. Wagner was the first true star of the game. While Hornsby’s number are arguably better, he played as a contemporary(ish) to Cobb and Ruth.

Walter still may get my actual vote as well. Without a CLEAR hitter, a pitcher should certainly be considered. And Walter getting this slot would not be a farce.

WWII is a legit argument, but injury isn’t. That is all part of the game/player. Ballpark factors, though, are part of the argument.
His first seven season might have been the best seven year run of any player ever. He was never the force he was post 1945 as he was pre war. Won the MVP but we all know what a joke that was

I am still waiting for SOMEONE to make a real solid argument in favor of Gehrig being this high. He was good, but I just don’t see any reason for his constant inclusion at this level (outside of his Hollywood story, of course).

well, your anti-clemens comes off like sour grapes... nobody questions the fact he did steroids... we do question when he started... but that really is not even relevant.. when boston got rid of him it was in the sense of BETTER ONE YEAR EARLY THAN ONE YEAR LATE phillosophy... he actually had a solid seasons with the red sox his last year...

also, if he did retire after his boston years... he would have made the HOF still, he would not have been an all time great... but 3 time CY, 10+ seasons is still a great resume...

Thank you for this reply. What a strange comment it was (especially from a Red Sox fan)... And how odd that a Yankee fan has to explain it to him!

When/if Clemens gets in the hall, what cap will he wear?

2 CYs with the Jays.
16 seasons, 1 MVP, 3 CY with the Sox.
2 Championships, 1 CY with the Yanks.
1 CY with the ‘Stros

its not really hollywood... its just simply that that speech is considered one of the best moments in baseball history...

he has everything that we want to love...

He has the shortened career for a terrible disease, so he has that WHAT IF aspect we love,
He has the 7 WS wins and great playoff stats, so he has the true legend feel...
and then has the great regular season stats...

I dont blame anyone for having him so high...

I just found another list.... These guys have Gehrig at #6.

It is a strange top 30 (I don't agree with a lot of the order), but there are some good write-ups...

I don’t BLAME anyone. I just want SOMEONE to stump for him and be his advocate. With nothing but silent voters, it just feels casual and not thought out to me.

Color barrier is a legitimate argument against but fewer teams may counter balance that, with the assumption being that the talent pool is less diluted than with more teams in the mix.

Farmers and grocery clerks needs to come out of the mix. All baseball players were getting paid in their era and so all were on equal footing in this regard (especially since everyone needed to work in the offseason).

Can’t argue too much with the names on the list, but I have some serious issues with a lot of the order. Aaron at 3 and Wagner at 15 are ridiculous, for starters.

Shane pretty much nailed it with his first comment. Aaron at #2 alone is disqualifying, but then including Jackie and 2 pitchers (neither named Roger or Walter or Satchel) is just dumb.

Aaron at #2?

GTFO.

And both these lists mention the speech. The speech had NOTHING to do with his on field play. They are getting distracted by the flashing lights.

People also love the Iron Man...

Ripken (one of my all time favorites) is also overrated because he played everyday for a long while...

there is a list for everything... that was always my point about lists... if it is a poll, there will be no consistency, and more of a popularity contest...

when single person does a list the list will come out better... assuming they are consistent through out.... we all have biases here and there that will rank some players where they should not be...

I agree on Ripken. The streak actually over shadowed him and the Orioles at the end. It became a bastardized achievement.

what is even worse is that games played is the biggest factor in WAR... so they use WAR to back up their notion that iron man is the best thing ever...
