I understand and acknowledge Milk’s complaint about the focus on the old-timers, but these two are just OMG good. Fewer teams, color barrier, playing against farmers and grocery clerks are all legit arguments against, though.

Don’t get me wrong. I agree that they are all time greats. I am just more balanced with my top 10. If it is dominated by an era isn’t that proof that we have a tough time measuring that era.

Wait I just checked. So far our list of 6 only has 2 that played before the color barrier was broken. Heck 3 of the 6 are black players. I’m wondering when the first Latino will make the list. ARod I guess?

I didn’t say we have a problem yet.

I've been voting for Big Train for a few rounds now... It is tough to compare pitchers vs players statistically... I think starting pitchers are much more valuable/important that position players...

Also, according to Britannica, we're doing alright so far!!

Voted for The Big Train, the Flying Dutchman and the Commerce Comet. Ohtani is a book without an ending, how can anyone vote for that? Clemens was a dead armed hasbeen when he left Boston. Magically, he puts on 100 lbs of muscle and finds his fastball again? The magic of the syringe. Flat out, he's not a HOFer without chemicals. Hornsby was the better hitter but a stone gloved 2b and a horses ass. Cy won 511 games because he pitched for 511 years. Musial, Seaver and Rickey were considered

These guys hardly overlapped, though. Wagner retired in ‘17 and Hornsby’s rookie year was ‘15.

Wagner handed off to Hornsby/Cobb
Hornsby/Cobb handed off to Ruth.

well, your anti-clemens comes off like sour grapes... nobody questions the fact he did steroids... we do question when he started... but that really is not even relevant.. when boston got rid of him it was in the sense of BETTER ONE YEAR EARLY THAN ONE YEAR LATE phillosophy... he actually had a solid seasons with the red sox his last year...

also, if he did retire after his boston years... he would have made the HOF still, he would not have been an all time great... but 3 time CY, 10+ seasons is still a great resume...

ARod (unless he is disregarded), Clemente, Cabrera, Pedro…

Interesting that there aren’t more in contention.

Cobb was before Hornsby...

Hornsby first good season was 1917, Ruth's yankees days didnt start until 1920....

Ruth and Hornsby's entire career overlapped...

That's the whole point and the point I made with Bonds. HOFer, probably. Top 10 player all time, FFS no

I'm interested to see when we start getting love for DiMaggio. a player who's career numbers were hurt by WWII, injuries and playing in the wrong ballpark. All of that keeps him out o the discussion now but sooner or later...

Deciding who advances to the runoff will be tough this time, I suspect. Up to now, I tried to find a gap for a natural cutoff, but I fear a gap may not exist this time.

Shockingly, I expect some posters will be so pissed of at where the cutoff will be that they bail on the whole endeavor.

WWII is a legit argument, but injury isn’t. That is all part of the game/player. Ballpark factors, though, are part of the argument.
