Down Goes Brown's Grab Bag: The Dumb Rule That Killed PK Subban's No-Trade Clause | VICE Sports

Another enjoyable read from DGB. Love the walk down memory lane to the Norris Division of the late 80s. But best of all, is this quote (he is talking about the Russells and Polaks of the NHL):

"But while forward-thinking fans have adjusted their view, old-school types still love these guys, and that leads to the same tired fights breaking out whenever they're discussed. So I'm proposing that we introduce a new term: "defensieve defenseman." In other words, a defenseman best known for being a variation on that classic hockey insult: a sieve."

Moving Bernier gives the Leafs $3.55 mil in cap space pre-LTIR. Assuming they sign a backup for $1.5 mil tops (my guess would be Jhonas Enroth) that leaves them plenty of space suddenly to add a top defenceman if they can convince someone to trade them one.

Of course, they'd have even more space if someone would hurry up and fucking trade for Bozak already.

Also, the reason this trade happened now and didn't just become a part of the Anderson trade was because Bernier was owed a $2 mil bonus July 1. Lou is most charitable.

At least Biz knows his place with the new AHL fighting rules.

Once upon a time, the NHL had understandings with other pro leagues to honor contracts. I take it the KHL is not one of them.

"Hey comrade, he is under contract to US! U-S-A. U-S-A." - John Chayka

I guess the KHL can be considered a pro league because they do pay the players (most of the time). I still laugh when some media pundits were saying the KHL was going to be major threat to the NHL.
