That's one of those rules that's not really a rule, right?

Boston will be crying, "Unfair", for years to come.

Notice how the ones complaining weren't even aware of the rule. I guess they don't have to worry about those things when they play ''fantasy'' games. Real life smacks them in the face. lol

Anybody else find it funny Jim Joyce was the ump on that final play. He got the call right, but still....

there is a reason the players continue to vote him the best umpire in the Majors, because he gets more calls right than any other MLB umpire...and will admit it when he is wrong.

Did you see his upper body? His upper body was actually going down in the process

Maybe you're the one who's retarded, thinking he did it intentionally - being a Cubs fan you'd probably know one when you see one

No one lifts their legs like that when they are trying to get up. Not unless you get up by doing a backwards summersalt like some acrobatic gymastics trainer, lmao.

The dumbest part of the rule is the base runner knows that all he has to do is fall over the fielder and he gets the call without any hesitation - that rule is such a one-way street type of call - the fielder should have at least an equal chance to get up

Allen Craig didn't have to run directly in the base path once he got up after sliding - he could have went to the right side of the bag and it would have been legal and not out of the base paths

An equal chance to get up ? Is that how you get up when you're laying on your stomach ? By raising your feet and lower legs straight up in the air ? It was clearly obstruction and a good call. Only Middlebrooks knows if it was intentional. It certainly looked like it. Doesn't matter though. It was obstruction.

Obviously a ton of Red Sox fans are furious right now. The guy who probably deserves the wrath in the end is Saltalamacchia for that idiotic throw, but that call might just let him avoid the goat horns

Correct he should have never thrown that ball. Let the closer handle the next batter.

Salty shouldn't have made that throw but I probably would've done the same thing. Had he made a good throw it would've been close.

I'm complaining and I know the rule - just because I know the rule doesn't mean I don't think it's stupid

The next batter was Pete Kozma, and then Kolten Wong. They would've gotten out of that inning no problem. Craig was pretty much irrelevant on the bases at that point.

If Middlebrooks did not lift his legs (and he did lift his legs and to me it looks like he lifted them intentionally) Craig would have scored easily

Because of that you have to make the call of obstruction.

Middlebrooks (the fielder) did hinder Craig (the runner). Whether intentional or not that is obstruction. Craig is awarded 1 base beyond the last base that he was legally on. So 1 base beyond 3rd is home.

Easy call. If you don't think it was obstruction you don't know your baseball rules. Go read MLBN rule book. Rule # 7.06

Also, Craig has 3 feet outside of his baseline. He was't 3 feet outside of his baseline so you can't call him out for that.

The obstruction call was easy. However, if you want to argue that the umps make the judgement that the last legal base Craig was on was 2nd and therefore advancing 1 base beyond 2nd would take hime to 3rd, that is an interesting discussion.

I don't buy it but I could see the umps ruling in that way so the game doesn't end on that obstruction call. In my opinion though Craig slid into 3rd safe as can be (which would make 3rd the last legal base he was on); the throw from home caromed off Middlebrooks and Craig and Craig saw that and took off for home.

The obstruction didn't happen until after Craig took off for home. And the clincher for me is that if Middlebrooks didn't trip Craig then Craig would have scored easily - bad ankle or not.

Sucks to end the game that way but it was the right call.

Because Will Middlebrooks was trying to get up, why would he just lift his legs and trip Allen Craig? There's no way it's intentional, especially if he's trying to get up - he probably doesn't have any time to think about intentionally tripping a guy when it's a fast paced situation like that, the only thing he's thinking about doing is getting up, which it was obvious that's why he was trying to do

that was the worst call in the history of sports. you cardinal fans are dellusional. if the rules say that it was so then the fucking rules need to be changed. these guys were just playing ball. wtf do you expect middlebrooks to do. he dove for a ball landed on the ground and the stupid fucking runner stumbled over him. thats baseball it happens. that was clearly not interference, anyone that thinks so needs to get their brain examined. the guy was in the process of making a play. there was NO intentional motive to obstruct. guy was flat on his belly. get the hell out of here with that shit. i play wiffleball and seen worse than that. dude was just trying to make a play. no intention WHATSOEVER to obstruct.
