NFL toughens its stance on domestic violence

In a letter sent to every NFL owner on Thursday, Commissioner Roger Goodell announced enhanced discipline under the personal conduct policy that will result in a six-game suspension for a first offense and a lifetime ban for a second offense committed by any NFL employee.

At times, however, and despite our best efforts, we fall short of our goals. We clearly did so in response to a recent incident of domestic violence. We allowed our standards to fall below where they should be and lost an important opportunity to emphasize our strong stance on a critical issue and the effective programs we have in place. My disciplinary decision led the public to question our sincerity, our commitment, and whether we understood the toll that domestic violence inflicts on so many families. I take responsibility both for the decision and for ensuring that our actions in the future properly reflect our values. I didn't get it right. Simply put, we have to do better. And we will.

I am reading that the second offense is an indefinite ban and the player can apply for reinstatement after 1 year.

I understand that the NFLPA would have a fit, but...to come out and say you made a mistake and not fix it seems bizarre. That said, I still think the NFL needs a disciplinary committee, not an all-powerful commissioner.

Seemed like a 'rules at the time' kinda thing that he was saying.

Kinda like when the NHL said they wanted to punish the Cooke/Savard hit but couldn't under the rules at the time, so they changed the rules.

I, for one, and SHOCKED that Jim Irsay might have a substance abuse problem. His dad was such a moral straight arrow, that the #1 son driving under the influence of chemicals is literally unbelievable. :rollseyes:

Not a big surprise, with all those concussions he was trying to get back quickly - this suspension actually isn't a bad thing for him because he would have tried to come back too early, now he can rest and get ready for Week 5
