Through all of this stuff, and some other crap...Bettman has emerged as the best of the commissioners.

My count is currently three work stoppages, pix (including one that wiped out an entire season). Yeah, it's not all his fault, but that's a pretty bad stain.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — A law enforcement official says he sent a video of Ray Rice punching his then-fiancee to an NFL executive three months ago, while league officers have insisted they didn't see the violent images until this week.

The person played The Associated Press a 12-second voicemail from an NFL office number on April 9 confirming the video arrived. A female voice expresses thanks and says: "You're right. It's terrible."

Why is a law enforcement official sending key evidence in an ongoing criminal matter to the NFL? This is now so much more than an NFL story.

i love how the meda is all in an uproar and saying that the nfl is in trouble if they don't fire goodell blah blah blah. majority of people couldn't care less if goodell saw the video or not. they are still going to watch/attend the football games.

i think the media should be more in an uproar over the fact that ray rice basically got off with a slap on the wrist in the legal system

Ray Ferraro agrees with you, sherbert (as I'm sure many other people do)

rayferrarotsn: and while everyone is sour at Goodell, don't forget Ray Rice knocked out his girlfriend

this is a pretty good take

Patton Oswalt -
Michelle McNamara, from TrueCrimeDiary.com, wrote this in a comment thread about Ray Rice. It's what I've been struggling to say about the video, especially in view of my thoughts on the celebrity leak and the ISIS video. But she said it better, so here it is:
"I'd actually argue the opposite: this should become mandatory viewing for young American men. Watching a beheading is torture **** and wrong. It's extreme, uncommon behavior that offers no lesson to the watcher. But domestic violence is real, common and, unfortunately, abstract for most people. They don't "get it." Ideally they would, but until you watch not a reenactment in sensitivity training class but real, grainy video of an extremely powerful man, someone whom you may have cheered on and looked up to, spit on the mother of his child, cold cock her unconscious, drag her body a few feet, kick her a little, then stand there coldly as she cries and comes to -- well, what I've observed in the last few days wasn't a leering spectator sport but a giant wake-up call for a lot of people. I was curious how young male sports fans would comment on this on message boards, and they were uniformly appalled. Shocked. I honestly don't think a lot of them knew what domestic violence in all its ugliness looks like. Now they do.
The iconic photo of nine year-old Kim Phuc running naked with her back burned by napalm showed the harsh realities of Vietnam and helped turn the tide against the war. Sometimes dark shit needs to be seen in all its specificity to be understood and ultimately changed. I feel fro Janey Palmer and understand she thinks her privacy is being invaded. But the fact is her husband committed a violent act and our society has an interest in curtailing such behavior, not just for her safety but for other women as well. I don't judge her for staying with him. That's her choice. But it's ludicrous for her to blame the media for ruining his career and negatively affecting their lives. Ray Rice and Ray Rice alone is responsible for that."
