It was one of the pressing questions of Nebraska's regular season:
What caused Jamal Turner's role at wide receiver to be reduced during the second half of the season.
He finished the regular season with 15 catches (for 243 yards), but had only two receptions in the final seven games.
"I think maybe just college football caught up to him a bit," offensive coordinator Tim Beck said Wednesday. "It is a grind. It's physical. You accelerate your learning. You see more defenses, more coverages, just that learning process. And when guys are unsure they don't play fast. Or they don't have confidence in what they're supposed to do or how they're supposed to do it sometimes."
Beck noted that Turner is a rookie playing a new position -- a position he's never played before this season.
"You throw in all these things, sometimes you implode," the coach said.
Turner arrived on campus as a touted quarterback recruit. Beck said coaches still give him a look at the position during practices.
"We always give him some reps there," he said.
You have to think bowl practices will be awfully important in Turner's development.
