Sterling and the Privacy Issue

I was talking with my wife last night and I was thinking that if Sterling fights this in court, it could very well lead to the country taking a long and hard look at the privacy of citizens. Technology is now at the point where everything we say and do has the potential to put out there for all to see. Sterling's comments cannot be defended, and I for one am glad to see him go. However, we may have opened up a hornets nest. As a nation are we going to have to redefine privacy laws? I'm not an attorney, but it will be very interesting to see if the Sterling issue is going to begin a discussion on what defines privacy in this country.

He will bring this to court no doubt and privacy will be an issue. V (or whatever the hell her name is) claimed Sterling gave her permission to tape the call. I'm sure Sterling will try and deny that.

But in this day and age no one has privacy which sucks

No only are we losing our right to privacy, we are also losing our right to speak our opinions if they differ from the norm. Not condoning his views, but if you have opinions that are bigoted towards any group, and especially if you're rich/famous, you will be villified in the press. It makes everyone feel better.

Quite frankly, if you're a bigoted asshole, I want you let me know up front rather than hide it, at least then I know where I stand with you.

On the contrary. Some of you are applauding a decision that usurps a man's property rights...and a franchise is a valuable piece of property, whether it's a professional sports team or a McDonald's restaurant...on the basis of his private opinions. Had Sterling said the same thing publicly, I'd join your chorus...but he didn't, and I can't.

This kind of politically correct, feel-good shit is bad for all of us. Is bigotry an evil? Of course...but fucking with people's rights to stamp it out is like prescribing decapitation as a cure for dandruff.

How are his property rights being usurped?

He's banned for DAMAGING the league, a fact of which there is no dispute.

He still owns the team. Efforts to remove him as owner are going to be damn near impossible, costly, and long drawn out.

People keep talking about his rights. Does he have a right to be a bigot? YES. The question you should ask yourself is does a bigot need to own a business where 99% of his employees are a part of the group he's biased against? Does the league have the right to remove someone that's damaging their brand? Do the players have a right to work in a non-hostile environment?

Basically, do you believe his right to be a bigot trumps every other "right" presented here? If so, you may want to re-check your humanity and priorities.

True story, JDM once told me that the American Medical Association has no credibility when it comes to medicine. I think JDM is a smart guy & all, but he's so full of himself it 's beyond comical sometimes.

I said the AMA has no credibility with what constitutes a disease. This is fact.

The worst part is once this gets into the public, it's turns into a proverbial lynchmob, and everyone loses their minds to think clearly.

What happened to 'I don't agree with what you are saying, but I'll defend you're right to say it' Sterling is obviously an ass, but there have been plenty of PR shitstorms through twitter comments that have cost regular people their jobs. Is that really what we want in this country?

You know what? This dude has more money than I'll make in 5 lifetimes. Screw him and his privacy. Just because he has money doesn't mean he's not an idiot. And it's been known for some time that he was a racist idiot. It just took a "public moment" to indict him for it.

Not a fan of this line of argument, it's the same mentality that lets police brutality slip through the cracks because they beat up some gangbanger or a drunk homeless guy.

The 'victim' is unsympathetic thus I don't have to care about it, and he got what he deserved.

There are stories of dudes getting arrested who happen to trip and fall down the stairs in order to get a knot on the head, all while in custody. That's not the argument here.

The dude can be a racist only if he's never heard being a racist? If the light comes in through the darkness to show where the cockroach lives then it can be exterminated. Until the light has shown his whereabouts, the cockroach continues his nasty germ filled life.

End of story.

Well, I think it was common knowledge he was a racist beforehand, I really don't have any problem with the sanctions except the forced sale of the team, I can't get behind that all.

And the argument is he is unsympathetic, thus an easy target. What happens if a player is taped expressing similarly nasty views towards gay people? Is that a perma-ban from the NBA?

If it was "common knowledge" then why didn't the league act? The answer is they had no proof. The taped conversation is the proof and enough to put this idiot out of business. If bigotry is deemed a large enough crime for expulsion from the NBA then so be it.

Probably because PR shitstorms are an easy way to act quickly, and we all know Americans love their TMZ storylines. If they went the route that Sterling was discriminating against employees or actual harmful actions beyond Public Relations Nightmares, it would have been hard to do.
