Clearly Dan Campbell learned nothing in that playoff game against the 49ers last year. It's going to bite him in the ass again this year in the playoffs. I'm all for being aggressive, but that was just stupid. I honestly think that guy would rather look manly and lose than weak and win. I think he's probably the most likeable coach in the whole league, but he really needs somebody else with less testosterone to make the big decisions for him on the sideline.

I was on the side of Campbell is an idiot last year.

However, I have since come around.

4/5 last night. The always go for it has absolutely resulted in more success than failure. And it has also become a part of the team’s identity.

I am willing to bet the strategy has led to more wins than it has losses.

Will it bite them again in the playoffs?

Maybe.

But I think just as likely to be the reason they win.

If you recall, Goff tripped on the play and hus knee did hit the ground before getting the ball to Monty.... just wondering why a QB can take a deliberate knee to kill a play, but an unintentional knee is ok?
Intent. Any ball carrier can “give themselves up” by sliding or taking a knee.

I'm not saying that he shouldn't go for it on 4th down or be less aggressive, but that end of the game one just made no sense. If they kick the field goal they still probably have a 90% chance of winning that game. If they go for it, then it's more like a 60% chance of winning. That's not aggressive, that's stupid.

As a lifelong Lions fan, I’d started to come around on Campbells in game decisions this year. Bates has proven he can be counted on in all situations.

Then there was last night.

In his defense, that defense is torn to shreds. But GB had no timeouts. Was not in support of going for it on 4th.

Screw you for hoping that.

Glasgow stepped on his foot. Thank God.

I edited my post. I meant to say where if a hand kind of got through there and touched him on the ground and just be able to see whether or not the officials are actually looking at the same fucking picture I’m looking at.

I don’t think that lines up.

Indoor stadium, so great conditions for kicking. New KO rules gives opposing offenses better starting postion.

Just need about 30 yards to get in FG range for a kicker like McManus.

If Lions make the first down, they win almost for sure.

If they kick on 4th, I think the game goes to OT probably 40-50% of the time. Especially given how GB moved the ball in the 2nd half.

I would have kicked. But when you have the best run offense in football and an injury depleted defense?

I do believe he made the choice that gave his team the best odds to win. And he kept the game completely in control of the best part of his team. The offense.

I think the Lions make that 4th and 1 a lot more than 60%.

Yes, but if you factor in that they have at least a 50% chance to win even if it goes to overtime, that's where the analytics come in.

I think it's kinda funny that we like to think Campbell had all these different data points he was considering to make the decision to go for it.

Id bet good money that all he was thinking was "this is 4th and 1? Go for it" and didn't take much of anything else into consideration

Goff said as much postgame.

Campbell came up to him during the week and said they’d be going for it most of the time when the chance presented itself.

He makes these meathead decisions on Tuesdays as much as spur of the moment.

Well even though the D was getting a bit rattled and plenty of top players missing...I still think he is slighting his own D but saying I don't trust you with 40 seconds and no timeouts to defend

I hear you.

But I think the percentages are actually pretty close either way.

Campbell chose to go with his team’s identity and go for it.

Honestly I think this mentality plays a significant role in the team culture and the team’s success.

And that stuff matters a lot. The swagger his offense plays with comes from Campbell.

Sure.

But if you make it on 4th and 1, the game is basically over.

And if you don’t, they have 10 yards further to travel to kick the game winning field goal.

Campbell going to bet on his guys to get that 1 yard every time.

I always do too- on Madden. And I typically call in the 2 tight heavy set and call a full back streak for a long ass score

Dump it off to Alstott in the flats, guaranteed 15-20yds but might have to shed the initial tackle attempt

Alstott was a beast in most Madden games, but for whatever reason it always worked better for me with Moose Johnston.

Can't remember which edition it was where a trigger press would get them to high step in the open field and yell "I'm gone!" but Moose would do it 5 yards behind the line with like 5 dudes in front of him
