Alvarez has a pretty stellar K/BB ratio and is a LH reliever --- Harrell, used to be an Astro a few years ago.

Had to give up Demeritte though.
Tepid just mentioned that we might hear Demeritte's name.

I am thinking he waits until right before the deadline if he has to in order to lower the cost.
I agree Bennie and I also do not think he will overpay for a 4/5. However, opinions are no more than just that, opinions. lol

Is Harrell still a starter?

Harrell has a 3.38 ERA for Atlanta this year in 29 innings or so over 5 starts. A WHIP of 1.26. Sounds like a serviceable starter for the time being.

All 5 games at the ML level this year were

Looks like the kind of deal we just might need. Plus we've got all kinds of depth at MIF. This is how you want to make a trade.

They are estimating that the qualifying offer this coming offseason will be $16.7 million. Do we risk that with Mitch? If not should we try to trade him now?
Mitch would take it because it would double his annual salary. JD will do what he did with David Murphy....let him go into FA. No way he gets a Q offer.

Maybe it's just me, but this seems like the most brutal mid-season trade market in a long time. Lots of teams with a legitimate shot at October; some who need help to overcome injuries and some who are fringe teams who need to add to complete. Couple that with a dearth of "that guy" talent, and I think you're going to see a continuation of overpayment like the Cubs did to get Chapman.

My point is, I'm starting to wonder if the absolute best thing the Rangers could do is stand pat.

When it comes to what we are being asked for starting pitching I agree. Two middle relievers or even one and we give up 2nd tier prospects. Hold on to our future which is just around the corner. Something @romeo212000 mentioned a few days ago. In the off season trade position player prospects for pitching prospects. Best decision going forward IMO. Roll the dice that Colby or Holand comes back to be productive. If both great.

From Jamey Newberg:

More on this tomorrow, but the initial reaction: Harrell could be a serviceable back-of-rotation starter, while Alvarez -- who has 28 strikeouts and three unintentional walks in 15 big league innings this season -- has the chance to give the bullpen a significant boost.

This puts us out of the desperate category in other potential trade partner's minds. That is very significant.

This is a valid point many probably haven't considered.

Kudos to JD.

And to our scouting department.

Yep and which means those holding out for a higher yield are probably on the phone calling JD back. A nice strategic move .

Kudos to JD.

And to our scouting department.

This reliever is exactly the kind of guy I expected them to get. Fastball not spectacular, but his change up and slider are what let's him get away with that fastball.
