The 2015 season is coming to a close, but it is never too early to start thinking about the 2016 season, right? One of the more noteworthy games scheduled in the first couple weeks of the 2016 season will take place in Bristol, Tennessee when Tennessee and Virginia Tech square off in the infield at Bristol Motor Speedway in Week 2 on September 10, 2016 in a game already being hyped for a projected attendance of 150,000. Now the game has a title sponsor (because what neutral field game doesn’t come complete with a title sponsor) and has a television deal in place.
According to a Forbes report by Kristi Dosh, Pilot Flying J, the largest operator of travel centers and travel plazas in North America, will serve as the sponsor for the Battle at Bristol. The game will be aired by ESPN, either on an ESPN network or ABC. Terms of the television deal for the game have not been reported.
Neutral site games continue to offer big financial incentives to schools playing in them. According to a report by USA Today, both Virginia Tech and Tennessee could make as much as $4.3 million by playing in the game if all tickets are sold.

Coming on the heels of Georgia’s announcement that Mark Richt wouldn’t return as head coach in 2016, a source tells 247Sports that current Houston head coach Tom Herman would be highly interested in the opening in Athens.
The 40-year-old Herman is regarded as the hottest up-and-coming coaching candidate in college football. He spent three seasons as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator — winning a national title in his final year with a third-stringer in Cardale Jones — prior to landing the head job at Houston last offseason. While with the Buckeyes, one of Herman’s primary recruiting territories was the Atlanta metro-area, which could help him if he were to be hired by Georgia.
Herman has been linked to the opening at South Carolina, but reports say he’s withdrawn his interest. Industry sources believe he’d be content waiting at Houston for something to open at Texas or Texas A&M (Herman played college in Texas and GA’d with the Longhorns), but an offer from Georgia would be enticing for Herman to turn down.
According to the 247Sports Team Talent Composite, the Bulldogs have the seventh-best roster in college football, based on recruiting history.
In Richt’s 15th season at Georgia, the Bulldogs are 9-3 but third in the East Division, despite entering the year as the favorites to wind up in Atlanta.
UGA alum Kirby Smart and Dan Mullen will also be considered, 247Sports’ Rusty Mansell believes.
Herman has Houston at 11-1 in Year 1 and will play in the AAC title game this weekend.
The search for a new coach at Missouri continues, and apparently one candidate has backed away from the pursuit. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Temple head coach Matt Rhule has turned taken himself out of the mix for the job at Missouri, which likely means Rhule will stay put in South Philly during this coaching carousel cycle.
According to the report, Temple is also in the process of negotiating a new contract for Rhule. Rhule has already signed a contract extension with Temple that runs through 2021. Rhule’s Owls are also preparing to take on Houston in this week’s American Athletic Conference championship game. Rhule does not believe this will serve as a distraction to his team as they prepare for the Cougars.
“I think our team is way too strong to be distracted about anything with me,” Rhule said. “I am honest with our players and tell them everything.”
Ironically, Houston also received some encouraging news this week when head coach Tom Herman said he has an agreement in principle to stay at Houston. Not only is that good news for Houston and Temple, but that is outstanding news for the conference as a whole, although Memphis did lose Justin Fuente to Virginia Tech.
For Temple, this should be encouraging news as a program. The two coaches before Rhule took the job each left to take on power conference opportunities once they came along. Al Golden took an offer to coach Miami (that, uh, didn’t exactly pan out nicely) and Steve Addazio bolted for Boston College. Who knows if Rhule will stick around for the long haul, but it would seem just being able to get him to return in 2016 would be a major step in the right direction for Temple.
