Week 7- Good and Bad

And with OSU/Oregon out of the way, let's get to the other things that were good (and bad) from Week 7!

It Was a Good Week for:
Fantastic Games (OSU/Oregon was just the headliner of a day of great games. Penn State fighting back to beat USC. Kansas State/Colorado. Alabama surviving a chaotic game against South Carolina. Tennessee digging deep to beat Florida. LSU stunning Ole Miss in OT. Pittsburgh getting to 6-0 on the year. Georgia Tech winning a shootout against North Carolina. Louisville scoring late to beat Virginia. Georgia Southern scoring 21 points in the 4th to top Marshall. ...Man, what a crazy week we had.)
The Purdue Cannon (Also a part of the madness was the "Purdue Cannon" game. Over in Champaign, we saw Illinois cough up a huge lead to Purdue, yet refused to quit as they won a 50-49 OT heartstopper.)
Vanderbilt (Hey! Vanderbilt managed to avoid a hangover from their Alabama win, as they won at rival Kentucky. Well done, 'Dores!)
Ethan O'Connor (This dude got a Pick-6 late in the 4th quarter, so that his Washington State Cougars can win at Fresno State.)
Western Michigan (It may have taken 9 f---ing hours, but the Broncos were FINALLY able to beat Akron. And they also renamed the field after proud alum David Stafford in the process, so good for them.)

It Was a Bad Week for:
Upsets (Despite all the chaos we saw yesterday, we actually didn't see that many upsets. Tennessee, Alabama, Penn State, and Georgia [all in the Top 10] all survived scares. Ohio State WAS playing in Eugene against the #3 team in the land, so their loss wasn't an upset. And Ole Miss's loss to LSU? I actually predicted it to happen.)
Upset picks in the Big 12 (On that note, my wild pick of West Virginia beating Iowa State failed. Oh, and I picked the wrong Arizona team to get the win, as Arizona lost to BYU while Arizona State stuns Utah.)
Colorado (Poor Deion. His team lost last night, but it wasn't his fault; Kansas State just wanted it more. Oh, and his star player Travis Hunter is out with a shoulder injury.)
UTSA (Oh! Here's a crazy finish that almost slipped by me; Rice scored a TD with seconds left to knock the Roadrunners down to 2-4. Oh, UTSA, how far you've fallen.)
UAB (Called it! I said UAB had no chance to stop the mighty Black Knights, and they got stomped 44-10. Uh, Trent Dilfer? Maybe you should stop being an head coach, 'cause I don't think it's working for you.)

Oh, and I think it's time for me to start checking out the FCS and see what they're up to. Will I have some FCS games on a list next week? Stay tuned!

Week 8- Top 10 Games

Okay. Since New Mexico State won a thriller against Louisiana Tech last night, I guess it's time for me to return to work. Yep, it's time for...

The Top 10 Games of College Football 2024 (Week 8)

(All times are Eastern)
10. Charlotte @ Navy [3:30, CBS Sports Network] (For the first time since 1960, both Army AND Navy are ranked in the AP polls. So of COURSE, I'm gonna look at their next games very carefully. Army is hosting East Carolina, but to me this game is slightly bigger.
Why? Because Charlotte is right next to Navy in terms of conference record. If the 49ers can break the Midshipmen defense, can they pull the shocker?)

9. Oklahoma State @ BYU [10:15 Friday, ESPN] (In the Big 12, both Iowa State and BYU are in the same boat this week: They're both still unbeaten, and they're both hosting a team that is 3-3 but is still rather dangerous. To me, the game in Provo is the one to watch... mostly because OK State is against the wall. If BYU's offense continues to do amazing things, the Cowboys' season could be finito.)

8. Arizona State @ Cincinnati [12:00, ESPN+] (The sleeper game of the week. Both Cincinnati and Arizona State are in the thick of the Big 12 race, and we'll see who will remain with only 1 loss in the league. ASU might have RB Cam Skattebo cooking right now, but this will be an early kick-off for the Sun Devils; can they handle it? And can Cincy's offense crack the solid ASU defense?)

7. LSU @ Arkansas [7:00, ESPN] (Another edition of the "Battle for the Golden Boot" rivalry! And it could be ANOTHER dandy! LSU is off a resume-boosting win over Ole Miss, but can they turn around and stop the Razorbacks again? As for Arkansas, they've had a bye week to unwind after their Tennessee win... and to figure out a plan to stop Garrett Nussmeier and the LSU offense. Will the Arkansas defense kick butt again?)

6. Michigan @ Illinois [3:30, CBS] (Just a simple ranked-vs.-ranked battle in the Big 10 here. Yet I'm wondering what sort of adjustments Michigan's offense have made since the last time we saw them. They got shut down by Washington, so will we see another QB change? Or a reawakening of the run game?
Meanwhile, Illinois has been chugging along with QB Luke Altmyer not making a lot of mistakes [only 1 INT so far for him]. Now that I think of it, maybe the Illini offense will decide who wins this one.)

5. Nebraska @ Indiana [12:00, FOX] (This is one of Indiana's biggest home games EVER, no doubt about it. So what will happen here? Will the Hoosiers surprise people again and get to 7-0 on the year? Or will Nebraska's offense wake up and FINALLY get the Huskers a win over a ranked opponent? To me, the Hoosiers D will determine where this one goes.)

4. Notre Dame vs. Georgia Tech {from Atlanta, GA} [3:30, ESPN] (The game may be on a neutral field [Mercedes-Benz Stadium], but I'm not fooled at all. This is a home game for Georgia Tech, and everyone knows it. So why is Notre Dame an 11-point favorite? Are the Vegas sharks just impressed by Notre Dame's recent performances? Are they doubting the Jackets' ability to attack the Irish D? Or are they just drunk? Find out in what I think will be a VERY close game.)

3. Miami @ Louisville [12:00, ABC] (It's time for the people at ABC to rejoice! That's because they got the Top 3 games of Week 8 right here on their network! It begins at noon when Louisville hosts Miami in an attempt to frustrate the Hurricanes again [like they did last year]. For Miami, they've had a bye week to destress after their 2 recent heartstoppers [against Va-Tech and Cal]. Will the bye week result in a better overall effort from Miami? Or will their luck run out against the tough Cardinals?)

2. Alabama @ Tennessee [3:30, ABC] (For Part 2 of ABC's big tripleheader, we'll go to Knoxville for the "Third Saturday in October" rivalry. Alabama may have had a rough 2 weeks [ask Vandy and South Carolina], but they will be desperate to stop the craziness and win in Knoxville. And what's with everyone losing faith in Tennessee? Okay, they did have to use OT to win their game last week, but it was against a bitter rival in Florida. And Tennessee beat the Tide the last time Alabama went to Knoxville. It's Nico Iamaleava vs. Jalen Milroe, and let's see what happens!)

1. Georgia @ Texas [7:30, ABC] (Despite all of these big games on this week, it's still easy to know which game is #1. Yep, it's the Georgia Bulldogs going to Texas to face the Longhorns in a heavyweight prize fight. Texas hasn't been pushed too much in 2024, but how will they respond when Carson Beck and Georgia punches them in the mouth? Time to find out!)

Best "mid-major" game: South Dakota State @ North Dakota State (OOOO! It's time for the "Dakota Marker" rivalry to take place once again. And it's on ESPN2, which just shows you how big this year's installment is.)
Game with the best chance to be a bust: Oregon @ Purdue (I know it's on Friday night. And Purdue DID put off a strong fight last week. But don't fool yourselves, people; Oregon has this covered easily.)
Honorable mention for the Top 10: Western Kentucky @ Sam Houston, ECU @ Army, Virginia @ Clemson, and North Texas @ Memphis.

My prediction segment is next!

Georgia vs. Texas
To me, the Georgia/Texas game was a little middle-of-the-road in terms of game action. Georgia doesn't care, though; they got a BIG win as they took down the top-ranked Longhorns.

Too bad everybody's talking about this today and not the Georgia win.

Week 8- Good and Bad

Before you guys go over to buy your Yankees World Series tickets (it's about time those Yankees got back into the Fall Classic), let's look at the Good and the Bad from Week 8:

It Was a Good Week for:
Jadan Baugh (Wait. Where did THIS guy come from? This Florida QB just ran for 5-TD's in the Gators' win over Kentucky! Hmm... could Billy Napier have found his "silver bullet" that'll save his job?)
UNLV (Away from the spotlight, UNLV defeated Oregon State [in Corvallis] to get to 6-1 on the year.)
Memphis (Memphis won the best "under-the-radar" game of the week, as they defeated North Texas in a 52-44 shootout.)
Colorado (Uh, wait a minute, folks. Colorado just won at Arizona to exceed their win total from last year. Maybe Deion Sanders and crew are finally getting their shit together; we'll just have to keep watching and see.)
Tennessee's defense (Hey! Tennessee just defeated Alabama again! And they did it with their defense! In fact, their defense has been lights-out nearly all season! Hmm... should Georgia be worried about these guys?)
Notre Dame (This is what Notre Dame is thinking about right now: "Yes! We passed another test, and we humbled Georgia Tech. And when we beat Navy and Army like we always do, everyone will love us! Yeah! We're making the playoff, with or without Northern Illinois' help!)

It Was a Bad Week for:
Texas Tech (Yesterday, "College Gameday" call Texas Tech a dark-horse contender in the Big 12. And just like that, TTU stumbles as they lose to Baylor at home.)
Southern Cal (USC coughed up another lead [this time at Maryland] and lost 29-28 to the Terps. And their rivals UCLA finally got a Big 10 win yesterday [at Rutgers]. For god's sake, USC, San Jose State now has a better record than you! This isn't funny anymore!)
Upsets (For the 2nd week in a row, we got a fine amount of good games but not a sizable amount of upsets. Iowa State and BYU were able to dodge upset attempts by UCF and OK State [respectfully]. Miami survived AGAIN, this time at Louisville. And Alabama WAS in Knoxville when they lost, so...)
Oklahoma (What... the f--k? Sooners! I thought you guys had this game! But nope! Your offense just keeps screwing up, and now you lost at home to South Carolina.)
Nebraska (I expected Indiana to find a way to beat Nebraska yesterday. But 56-7? Nebraska lost 56-7?! WHAT THE ACTUAL F--K?!)

And finally, I don't know what to make of Michigan's latest loss. Were they just being miserable again? Or is Illinois really that good? Let me know.

#1 yes it is.

#2, look at the remaining schedule. must be nice. they'll win out.

I wouldn’t call it difficult and I wouldn’t call it weak for a Power 4. It’s a standard P4 schedule. They play three top 20 teams which is better than multiple P4 teams actually. And while I would call Ohio State’s schedule slightly tougher by comparison for instance, you guys also play three top 20 teams this season.

Week 9- Group of Five Special

So Sam Houston won it's 6th game last night. The bad news is, they might end up on the "Not Top 10" after hitting their own teammate during a punt return. The good news is, at least they're bowl eligible!

So Week 9 is underway, and it is LOADED with content. So for the first time this season, I'm FINALLY giving some love to the smaller leagues. It's time for...

The Top 10 "Group of Five" games of Week 9

(All times are Eastern)
10. Western Carolina @ Mercer [3:30, ESPN+] (We start in the Southern Conference, where the Mercer Bears look like the best team in the league. But ARE they? They did get upset by Samford last week, and now they're hosting a Western Carolina team that's now leading the pack. And WCU's Cole Gonzales [their starting QB] has over 2,100 passing yards already this year. Will another upset happen?)

9. Incarnate Word @ SE-Louisiana [7:00, ESPN+] (In the Southland conference, this is a BIG mid-season game for 1st place in the league. SE-Louisiana has been winning with their defense [and the great play of RB Antonio Martin Jr.], and Incarnate Word is winning with their passing attack [as usual]. We'll see which side cracks first.)

8. Dartmouth @ Columbia [1:30, ESPN+] (And here's a big mid-season game in the Ivy League, as unbeaten Dartmouth visits 4-1 Columbia for 1st place. Yet Dartmouth has been walking the razor's edge over their last 4 games, only outscoring their opponents by 10 points TOTAL. Let's see if the Big Green plays a more complete game, or if the Lions take them out.)

7. New Mexico @ Colorado State [7:00, Fubo] (Sorry, but Fubo was the closest thing to a broadcast network I could find for this game. Anyway, New Mexico is surprisingly in the Mountain West race right now, as their offense has gotten much better. But Colorado State is right next to Boise State and UNLV in the standings, and I'm sure they can score on a Lobos defense that has been lacking. Is a shootout looming? Most likely.)

6. South Dakota @ South Dakota State [7:30, ESPNU] (Here's the big FCS game of the week. The South Dakota Coyotes are 6-1 and looking great! But now they travel to Brookings to face their in-state rivals in the Jackrabbits. A Jackrabbits team, by the way, that isn't happy with losing the "Dakota Marker" game to North Dakota State last week. Will SDSU's offense recover? Or will South Dakota make things worse?)

5. Bowling Green @ Toledo [3:30, ESPN+] (Man, ESPN+ is killing it with their coverage of the lesser leagues. Anyway, it's time for another edition of the "Battle of I-75", where the loser will have their MAC title hopes severely crippled. Not much else to say about it, except enjoy the QB duel between Tucker Gleason and Connor Bazelak.)

4. UL-Monroe @ South Alabama [5:00, ESPN+] (The Sun Belt will have a doubleheader where surprise title contenders square off. One of them will be South Alabama taking on the surprising Warhawks, who is winning games despite not putting up flashy offensive numbers. Maybe if QB Gio Lopez continues to steer USA well and not make mistakes, the Jaguars can break UL-Monroe down.)

3. Georgia Southern @ Old Dominion [7:00 tomorrow, ESPN2] (And here's the other part of the doubleheader. Hmm... Is Georgia Southern finally returning to contention in the Sun Belt? Maybe, if they keep their cool and win in Norfolk against Old Dominion. But ODU is another team that is finding ways to win, so JC French and his Eagles needs to be ready.)

2. Tulane @ North Texas [12:00, ESPN2] (With Army on a bye week and Navy occupied with Notre Dame in New Jersey, this is the big game in the American conference in Week 9. Tulane wants to stay on pace with the military schools, while North Texas was SO CLOSE to beating Memphis last week. I'd like to see if the Mean Green offense stays on the gas pedal, or if Tulane passes their big test in Denton.)

And the #1 game on the list... has ended up on the "big-boy" Top 10 list. So you'll have to wait until tomorrow to see it!

Week 9- Top 10 Games

So something actually happened last night in football. Let that set the tone for the rest of the week, as we are PACKED. So let's get to...

The Top 10 Games of College Football 2024 (Week 9)

(All times are Eastern)
10. BYU @ UCF [3:30, ESPN] (Originally, I had Nebraska @ Ohio State at the #10 spot. But if Nebraska lost 56-7 to INDIANA, what chance do they have of winning in Columbus? ZERO chance, that's what!
So instead, we got the latest adventure of the unbeaten BYU Cougars! Can they pass another road test, this time in a place they rarely get to visit [Orlando]? And UCF may have a 4-game losing streak, but they came DAMN close to stunning people like Cincinnati and Iowa State over their last 2 games. Can they finally get over the hump this time?)

9. Boise State @ UNLV [10:30 Friday, CBS Sports Network] (As I said 4 months ago, this contest is a rematch of the 2023 Mountain West title game [same venue and all]. And, joy of joys! A lot will be on the line again, as the Broncos and the Rebels are highly regarded entering this game [Boise is ranked #17th, while UNLV is VERY close to being ranked again]. And only 1 of them can remain unbeaten in the Mountain West, so will the Rebels stop Ashton Jeanty... or at least be able to keep up?)

8. Syracuse @ Pittsburgh [7:30 tonight, ESPN] (This is the 80th meeting between these border rivals, but rarely has the rivalry carried high stakes like this. The Orange wants an upset win to get bowl-eligible [and maybe get ranked], while the Panthers just wants to beat Syracuse again and get to 7-0 on the year. And both teams have had a bye week to prep for this.
The X-factor here may be Pitt's QB Eli Holstein. He's done great so far, but can he outduel Kyle McCord? And if he can't, will his running game bail him out? Let's find out!)

7. SMU @ Duke [8:00, ACC Network] (The sleeper game of the week. Both SMU and Duke are 6-1 and doing surprisingly well in ACC play so far. We have a QB duel between Preston Stone and Maalik Murphy here, and the over/under is... actually pretty low. I guess the defenses of each team will decide who wins this sneakily important ACC contest.)

6. Missouri @ Alabama [3:30, ABC] (After last week's loss to Tennessee, the situation at Alabama has gone from "tension-filled" to "one step away from panic". So you know what that means! Time to see how the Crimson Tide will react to all of the negativity and perform against another ranked foe.
But I did have to knock this game down a few pegs, mostly because Missouri is dealing with some tough injuries that could sideline BOTH Nate Noel and Brady Cook. Are the Tigers capable of winning if these two guys can't go?)

5. Notre Dame vs. Navy [from Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ] {12:00, ABC} (Notre Dame vs. Navy is nothing new. Having it on a neutral field, that's also nothing new. But these two teams fighting when BOTH of them are ranked? THAT'S something out of the ordinary.
For the Irish, this is just another test as they're looking to shut down the overeager Midshipmen once again. But for Navy, this could be their biggest triumph in a LONG time; imagine what could happen if their new offense breaks Notre Dame's strong D!)

4. Penn State @ Wisconsin [7:30, NBC] (Well, Penn State is on a primetime spot again, so let's see if Drew Allar and the Nittany Lions keep it together this time. But what's this? Wisconsin has won 3 in a row? And now the Badgers defense is running at peak strength? Hey, Penn State! I think Wisconsin has finally got their shit together; let's hope your bye week has helped you figure out a way to score on these guys.)

3. Texas @ Vanderbilt [4:15, SEC Network] (What a year it's been so far for Vanderbilt! From "also-ran" to "upset maker". From a nobody to someone who is ranked [first time in the regular season since 2008] and having a game ranked in the Top 5 on my list. And they're once again playing with house money; if they lose we're all expecting it, and if they win we'll just give them more praise.
So how will the Texas Longhorns deal with this? Are they focused, or are they still thinking about their failure against Georgia [and the fans they now have to ban from their stadium]? One thing's for sure: Texas have BETTER NOT underestimate the 'Dores. They BETTER NOT.)

2. Illinois @ Oregon [3:30, CBS] (Oregon is now ranked #1 for the first time since 2012. But the Ducks don't care about that now; they're too focused on shooing away the pesky Fighting Illini of Illinois. Let's see if the calm poise of QB Luke Altmyer and the coaching of Bret Bielema will be enough for Illinois to pass this ultimate test against the mighty Ducks.)

1. LSU @ Texas A&M [7:30, ABC] (Whoa. Who would have thought that Texas A&M would improve enough over Mike Elko that they're in a "main-event" game in his 1st year on the job? Will the Aggies shock LSU and continue their crazy ascension in the SEC? Or will LSU's offense shred the Aggies D and get a big marquee win? It'll be nuts inside "The 12th Man", and let's see which rival outfights the other!)

Game with the best chance to be a bust: Nebraska @ Ohio State (...I kinda gave it away at the beginning of this list, didn't I? Well Nebraska, prove me wrong! But I'm expecting you to be shredded again, this time in Columbus.)
Honorable mentions for the Top 10: Texas Tech @ TCU, Washington @ Indiana, Cincinnati @ Colorado, Michigan State @ Michigan, and Florida State @ Miami.

Miami/FSU as just a "honorable mention"? Man, the Seminoles have REALLY fallen off. Anyway, my prediction segment is next!

Not sure why you are getting on their schedule as doesn't seem too terrible. Similar to ours other than we play PSU and they don't (which is not up tp Oregon).
