I get more and more comfortable with the thought of Mark Sanchez playing QB for the Denver Broncos, but today I'm thinking John Elway wants the next John Elway on the team. Sanchez is not that guy - and Kaepernick is not that guy.
Is that guy in the NFL draft? Elway has enough ammo to go get Wentz or Goff, but probably won't. The Broncos are certainly at 31 in position to draft the 3rd best QB in this draft. Since the 3rd best QB will need some development - you can draft him with the 31st pick of the 1st round - and get a 5 year contract to develop him (with Oz's contract finishing one year short of 5 due to his 2nd round status). If the Broncos are going to invest in a QB this year - they might as well do it in the 1st round and get 5 years on the contract.
I was laughing at DC and SS for suggesting the Broncos would go QB with the 1st pick, but now I agree they have a good point.
If the Broncos do intend to trade for Kaepernick - they will inherit the 9ers contract (reports are they have an agreement with Kaepernick to lower his salary) - which at this point only guarantees against injury. So the Broncos will control him through 2019, but can cut him at zero dead money at any time. But are the Broncos going to pay Sanchez $4.5 Million and Kaepernick - $12 million - effectively not reducing their QB costs from last year?
As it currently stands - the Broncos have 5.8 Million salary cap space. They need about $5 million for the rookie pool, but have $10 million on the books for Clady -who will likely be traded before 4/18 or released. The only way to get to the $12 million for Kaepernick - would be to off load Clay's contract and trade Sanchez to the 9ers.
However, you wouldn't trade Sanchez to the 9ers until the later part of the 1st day of the draft - because you want to keep the other 31 teams guessing about what you are going to do with your 1st pick. You certainly don't want to signal your intentions to pick a QB for fear someone will jump ahead of you.
So if this line of thought - works for the Broncos - they acquire Kaepernick - - pick the best QB after the first two chosen - and trade Sanchez and his $4.5 million salary cap number. Now you enter the season with Kaepernick as the starter - Prescott, Lynch or Cook as the heir apparent and Siemian with one year experience on the rookie fighting for the 2nd spot in 2016. And - you have $4 million more in salary cap money to spend on top of the rookie player pool set aside. The Broncos then spend the $4 million on some cheap 2nd waive FA vets looking for work.
