Yes, this is hockey. There are dirty hits made out of frustration that anyone can make. It happens. But then there are dirty hits made out of malice... And it is very easy to read between the lines on those. There is no place for the second one.

I think Kunitz tends to cross the line into dirty town when he's not producing offensively. When he's on a streak or playing well and developing plays, he keeps it clean, but when guys get hurt and he's not having chemistry with his line, he gets lulled into some weird boredom and does something stupid. This is certainly the stupidest thing he's ever done.

Brewer: Borderline, fine at the most. Probably won't get anything and I'm OK with that.

Richards: I think Versus was hyping this one up ("oh, Mike is getting a call!!"). The five for elbowing is enough, he doesn't need supplemental discipline. It was tame as hell, and he wasn't even skating.

That was the Ruutu hit? Hm... 1 game max. I can't even tell if he got him in the head, but his shoulder was in Erat's chest and it wasn't all that late.

EDIT: If he got him in the head, I say 3 games, but if he didn't, 1 or none.

Okay, so I slowed down the video and watched more closely. It was a head shot. 3 games.

EDIT: This is somewhere between my prediction based on playoff suspensions so far and where I would want to put the suspensions. Ruutu's been suspended before, too, so it might increase. The going rate for this hit, though, should be something like 1 or 2 games based on the Kunitz and Downie suspensions, but I want all head shots to be eliminated, and would have preferred Downie to stay at 1, Kunitz to get 5 or so, and this hit would be in the Kunitz range, but a little shorter, because it was less malicious. So if Kunitz got 7 (which I think was my recommendation), then Ruutu would get 5, for example.

i gotta be honest i dont see rutuu's as being suspension worthy either.. its definitely late and deserved an interference call.. but in that video at least, it didn't look like a head shot at all.. actually looked pretty tame and i'm surprised erat is missing time

i'm chalking this up to another instance of campbell handing out punishment based on the injury, not the hit or the intent

If you look at it in super slow mo, you can see that the shoulder contacts Erat's chin area. It wasn't much, but he got him.
