USC To Offer 4-Year Scholarships

Leading the way in student-athlete welfare, USC will now offer four-year athletic scholarships in the revenue sports.

USC will offer four-year athletic scholarships to all scholarship student-athletes in the revenue sports of football and men's and women's basketball in lieu of the current practice of offering one-year renewable scholarships, USC athletic director Pat Haden announced Monday.

Haden said this policy will be effective July 1 for all current and future scholarship student-athletes in those sports.

"In taking this action, USC hopes to help lead the effort to refocus on student-athlete welfare on and off the field," Haden said.

If that helps in not paying athletes, then bravo USC.

Doesn't surprise me. USC has generally always treated schollies like they were 4 year deals anyway. This just makes it official. Glad they're doing this.

Should help even more with recruiting too.

Later today, 3 star OT Mason Walter (Temecula, CA) also committed to ASU. That 6 Olineman to the PAC in just a couple days.

Looks like Oregon and ASU got that section of their classes pretty much done for 2015.

I'm glad nobody talks about ARIZONA. I'm a homer and I know it.
Watch out PAC, U of A is going to the Rose Bowl this year!
I wrote it, it must be true. :noidea:

Does this effect the walk-ons that get awarded scholarships or will they still be year to year?

To my knowledge, that was not addressed. Walk-on's don't typically get awarded schollies until their junior or senior seasons anyway, so it's unlikely that they would be affected much.

I would assume that if a walk-on was awarded a schollie prior to his senior year, it would be for however many years he has left, since Haden has also looked to have walk-ons included in other student/athlete welfare issues (making more meals available, etc.).

I definitely like protecting walk-ons however I'd rather see a hard working Junior get that #85 scholarship and let him know that its a year to year decision based on availability than have a coach worry about needing it in future years and not giving it out.

Good point, although I don't really see that as too much of an issue, even if it's a schollie awarded to a junior. We usually have at least a couple of transfers almost every season, so that frees up a schollie or 2 each season as well (although we may see fewer transfers now that 4 year guaranteed schollies are a matter of policy).

If memory serves, I don't think we had any situations where a walk-on was granted a scholarship as a junior and then lost it the following season until the sanctions. I believe that Kiffin did it once (maybe twice) because it was the only way to fit a top recruit in with the schollie reductions.

Athlon PAC 12 stadium rankings

Guess it is just quite slow enough around here for the PAC to have a thread on topic also seeing the B1G has one.

1. Oregon
2. Washington
3. UCLA
4. Colorado
5. USC
6. California
7. Utah
8. ASU
9. Zona
10. Oregon State
Tie 10. Stanford
12. Washington State

8 of 10 voters had Autzen #1, Rick Neuheisel being one of the number 2 votes.... He had Husky Stadium... Of course.

I'd take Washington's over Oregon's after their upgrades they did.

Having the Farm at #10 seems a bit low. Its a beautiful stadium. I do like the fact that they have a Trojan pictured in their stadium picture as well. :)

I think USC is way too high.

I don't know about way too high, but 5th seems a bit too high (unless we're getting credit for the coming upgrades). Maybe 7th. Also, Stanford seems low and UCLA seems a bit high as well. Outside of the Rose Bowl is pretty cool (tailgating on a golf course), but inside the stadium isn't that great.

Love the PAC. Love the quality of teams they put out there top to bottom, some exciting ass football.

But I'm sorry, after Oregon and Washington it gets really pathetic when it comes to fanbases, stadium atmospheres, etc., real pathetic. UO and U-Dub have some damn good stadiums and some very passionate fans. After that it just gets real sorry.

Agree somewhat Boise.

It's too bad you have to say "when they are good" their stadium is awesome.

But that is the case. We out west just don't have that Midwest and southern cfb passion throughout the states like they do.

But I will say it, when WSU and OSU are playing competitive football, they are fantastic venues. Small, not the fanciest stadium.... But they as you probably well know they can be good stadiums.

Same with a lot of the PAC. Lately, most Oregon games at opponents home stadiums are pretty lively since the Ducks are not liked and winning for a few years.
