I always struggle with Stanford because of the academics requirements and what downside that might have to incoming HC candidates. I mean they also have the opposite draw at times. We might have lost a kid that was a verbal to us after Stanford offered because of that added level of education so it can help them at times. I wouldn't argue if someone put them above Utah.
The other big hit that Stanford and Cal take is the cost of living in the area. A low level assistant is going to struggle to live. One thing Shaw did in his first year was demand subsidized on campus housing for any coaches that wanted to live in bike distance to the facilities. He got that. The other thing Stanford has, is all of th coaching positions are endowed now, so none of the salaries come out of the revenue stream, this is how they manage to fund 29 sports total.

One thing though. If you read Penn State boards after the game they all think that Penn State lost it in the fourth quarter by playing not to lose.I see USC finally got some plays and stops on defense and Darnold went ten for ten with Penn State defenders all over and around him.The Wrs were money too. Not only was Darnolds passes right where they needed to be the WRs were where they were supposed to be. The Penn State QB seemed to be chucking it up all night and hoping his WR would come down with it. To me thats why they lost. You can't live on that all day. The better coached offense played the best in the fourth.

I definitely see what you are saying about people saying "Penn State" lost it in the fourth. Compared to all the other games where they claimed Penn State won it in the fourth. Seemed a bit 'inconsistent'.

Both McSorely and Darnold did well all night in avoiding the sack, (McSorely sacked once and Darnold none?) but I definitely thought Darnold did a much better job of moving in the pocket to find the open receiver, while McSorely did a lot more drifting back and hurling it down field.

My point was more to the accuracy of the majority of their pregame predictions.

Your right , most on both sides thought it would be a close game. I think it was one of the evenly matched games with the two of the hottest teams. Penn State fans kept saying if they were behind by two TDS late they were just where they wanted to be that they were a second half team. USC has been kinda steady the previous seven games , getting out front and staying there. I think if took a lot of heart for them to withstand the third quarter bombardment of the Lions and stop the bleeding and score the last 17 points.

Well, Penn State did make several blunders in that last quarter. Those two passes were just really bad decisions, under duress or not. And those PI's were basic shit they teach you in peewee leagues. Face guarding into a PI twice is just inexcusable at that level in that moment of that type of a game. They weren't forced errors.

I think you can say both without taking away what USC did or giving them credit. USC executed down the stretch and Penn State didn't. USC deserved that win.

Lots of chatter that Foster Sarell will be committing to Stanford on Saturday. I'm sick enough already this week with a cold that's had me coughing so hard, my ribs feel like I took on Iron Mike in a boxing match. That will make me power puke for days.

That would mean the trees end up with the #1 and #2 Tackle recruits in the nation. And one right from our back yard.

Darnolds two passes were right where they were supposed to be and on time and if not for them interfering they would have been caught. So USC executed regardless that they committed PI. So thats not a Penn mess up thats USC taking it to them.

And if they even slightly turn their heads in those same spots they get credit for those breakups as neither was caught, but both were given the penalty because they didn't turn their heads.

Yes, they were great throws. I said give every credit for USC making clutch plays down the stretch where Penn State didn't. It's a fair and accurate assessment IMO.

I think if you have a guy covered you can turn and look for the ball. if you have no clue where the ball is and are chasing the receiver you run into him when he goes for the ball. Thats bad coverage not just not turning your head. IMO.

Agree. They made 3 critical mistakes that ultimately cost them the game.

Some PSU fans were saying they "went conservative," but from what I saw, they stuck to what had been working all game long, running the football. They averaged 6.4 yards per carry. It just happened that USC's defense finally decided it was time to get a stop or 2.

That Penn State QB. I don't know what he was thinking especially the second throw. Leon was just sitting back there playing center field. Jack Jones was lost on both of those two plays so it's a good thing they kept Leon back there. lol

They didn't rise in the moment, and USC did.

Young kid trying to make a play and probably didn't see McQuay. Having said that, the reason he may not have seen him was because he was under duress, in which case he should have done what his coaches no doubt told him and thrown it out of bounds.

That teams going to be a beast next year in the Bg10. A whole lot of underclassmen played for them this season.

I'm not sure if not losing that many off the offense for us is a good thing, or a bad thing. If that's the weaker unit will their added experience put them farther ahead next year? They lose 1 WR, 3 linemen (1 starter, 2 reserves), and 1 TE off their entire offensive depth chart. Clearly O line is the area of most concern. Sure, losing Ross is tough, but they are very deep at WR. They have to keep Jake upright if they want to hit any of them next year.

I think O lines are always helped with more experienced because they have to function as a unit. I'm not as familiar with your team as you are but I think you guys need a big back . Not only for short yardage and to pound the ball but to help with protection too. Your QB needs to get comfortable in a moving pocket so when he's flushed he's used to making the throws.

We need bigger bodies on the line IMO. We have a few big guys, but clearly not enough to sustain a run game against bigger defenses and to protect Jake against them. I mean, sure they can probably use a guy like bama's back, but who couldn't? Coleman can push a pile more than Gaskin can, but it all starts with that line.

I'd love to see what Gaskin and Browning could do behind USC's line, but you have to play with what you have and both could improve in dealing with the issues on that line.

Well. I'd love to have a D line like Washington or Utahs.

Absolutely. I'm far less worried about the D going into next year despite all the attrition coming off of it. You rotate in so much more on defense that most of the kids starting next year at least got some time this year and the coaches know more or less what they have and what they have to work on.
