The Ottawa Senators announced today the team has acquired forward Ryan Callahan from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for goaltender Mike Condon. As part of the transaction, the Senators will also receive Tampa Bay's fifth-round draft pick in the 2020 NHL Draft while the Lightning will receive Ottawa's sixth-round selection.

Callahan, 34, has one season remaining on his contract and was placed on long-term injured reserve after suffering a career-ending back injury and a degenerative back disease diagnosis this past season.

One last comment. Every other team in the League gets valuable (1st, etc) assets for helping another team get out of cap trouble. Dorion hit new levels of stoopid by paying TB to help TB out of their cap problem.

The rebuild is over jstew, who needs first round picks, the Canucks have all the pieces in place to contend.

Sens are currently at $65.9M in spend. Of that, $16M is on LTIR/buyout. Actual players on the ice will be under $50M.

A travesty.

It gets worse.

Players like Zaitsev, Brown, Anisimov, etc. have already had their bonuses paid by their former teams. So while their cap hit brings the number up to $65M, Eug is spending nowhere close to that. It's closer to $43 million right now.

The travesty here is that this technically gives the Sens some flexibility above the floor so that they can (and I'm sure will) move out salary in the form of any good players who draw interest over the course of the year.

So basically you can say goodbye to a guy like Pageau, who is exactly the kind of veteran you want to keep around in a full on rebuild. But this isn't a rebuild. This is a financially motivated fire sale, carried out by a drunken, demented con man.

Dorion is a terrible trader but he can't do much on these types of trades because he HAS to send useless money the other way (Condon).

It would be one thing to call it being cheap for the sake of cheapness. I get that’s Eugene’s thing.

What’s infuriating is that it helps out a division rival who will almost surely still be very good in the timeline Looney Liver says he expects his team to compete in without any benefit to his on-ice operation.

I hope their attendance is 4000 this year.

Jimbo outlasts another GM as the Wild are cutting ties with their GM after one year.

I do plan on starting to go to at least one away game a year...maybe that'll be a cheap one that the Jackets should actually win.

I mean, I'd like to give them credit for doing so after it became quickly obvious he had no fucking clue what he was doing but rather than doing this in April they let him run the draft and free agency so...

Hey, Fenton’s got two years left on his contract with the Wild. If Melnyk gets whiff of this then he’s gonna pick him up as an advisor to Dorian assuming the Wild are on the hook for most of his salary.

At least Fenton was able to lock up some guys in their 30s to multi year NMC contracts before he got canned.

ftfy

That seems to be most of the contracts on our veterans at this point.

Yeah, timing on the Fenton move was a bit suspect. Always expected more of him as a GM. I wonder who the Wild get to replace him as GM.

I’d give up a decent piece or two for Kreider if I had the cap room.

Yeah for one more year and considering we've whiffed on everyone else, I might not mind so much.

If only he could play center.
