I hope Hexy isn't listening to the players in this case because it would be a mistake - after the season they've had, the players don't deserve that much input on whether the coach comes back or not

I agree. And I can't imagine Berube comes back. Just find it odd that the players apparently like him.

Reverse Psychology. We really like him (wink wink), please keep him.

Manning extended for a year. One way contract, so he would presumably be with the Flyers next year. I like it, I like Manning a lot.

Streit, Grossmann, Schenn, Schultz, Manning, and MacDonald all signed for next year. Presumably MDZ will get resigned as well. That's 7 dmen (in case you have counting deficiencies :)).

I'd say at least 1 gets moved this off season, but I also think this shows the Flyers don't plan on using one of the young guys next year.

Don't forget we also have Gudas which makes 7 and MDZ would be 8. I think Manning has earned a shot. Ideally he is a 3rd pairing guy. Unless moves are made, our top 6 guys wont be on the ice.

Believe me, I wish I could forget a few of these guys. I know little about Gudas. The defense has been playing well without Schenn and A Mac. CC is better than both of them also. Manning has played better than both of them. MDZ is better than both of them. I don't see MDZ being signed with 7 under contract. Turnover happens after next year when Grossmann and Schenn are either traded or not signed.

Fortunately if they don't sign MDZ, they'll at least get something for him. As an RFA they could move his rights for tangible assets. Perhaps his rights are part of a package to move up in the draft.

It is an interesting case though to be sure. Their options with MDZ are essentially:
1. Move his rights for assets at the draft.
2. Sign him to a 1 year deal for cheap. UFA after next season. (ie 1 year 2.5 mil)
3. Sign him to a 2-4 year deal for significant money. He'll have leverage with the contract eating up some of his UFA years. (ie 2 years, 5 mil per season)
4. Sign him to a long term deal for a little less significant money. (ie 6 years, 4 mil per season)

I think my preference would be 2, 1, 3, 4. If you sign him to a one year deal this year, it keeps the cap hit down, but allows you to see how the first half of the season goes. If it goes well, you have a solid player on a cheap hit that gives you flexibility to add pieces at the deadline. If it goes poorly, you have a solid player on an expiring contract that you can move for big value at the deadline. Unless they can move some of the contracts they have, I don't want to tie up more money on defense.

I do prefer 1 and 2. Problem is that if he signs we have 8 NHL contracts on defense. We can go 13 forwards, 8 dmen and 2 goalies. Someone will get hurt at some point. I guess its better to play Manning and Schultz and have Schenn and A Mac sit. That's a ton in healthy scratches but at this point it doesn't seem to be the major issue. Since we should have some cap space next year, its only money and not space.

I love seeing the Pens continue to lose. Unfortunately and amazingly, the Bruins have cut them a serious break however.

For Pittsburgh to have lost 11 of 14 and still be in position to control their own destiny in the final game is nothing short of a miracle. I hope they miss out obviously, but it is looking like they will squeak in, win or loss against Buffalo.

Good bye Berube and welcome Claude Julien. I'm calling it now. Julien will be the next Flyers coach. I think Julien is going to get the raw end of the deal. His record speaks for itself. The Bs miss the playoffs for the first time during his tenure, yet he's probably toast. I hope Hexy has his phone number handy.. I have a ton of respect for him and I think he will get this team clicking like they should.

I like Nashville vs TB in the cup. I think TB wins it.

If Nashville can get out of the first round against Chicago, then I like their chances

In the East, I like Tampa but they have to prove that they can get out of the first round with that group - Washington is a darkhorse too

I keep overlooking the Rags. They may be a dangerous team. The problem with me picking them is how will King Lundquist look since he's missed most of the season?

as much as I don't want to, I'm taking Rangers over Blackhawks this year. Experience wins out.

I think I'll take St Louis over Ottawa. I'm never even close anyway, so what the heck?
