I go back and forth on Streit. Our 5-5 offense was pathetic. We finished 22 in goals per game. We had 195 goals with 54 on the PP. That's 28% on the PP. Comparatively, Tampa is #1 in goals with 242 and 46 on PP which is 19%. Chicago was middle of the pack and was 204 with 45 on PP which was 22%.

Even with such a poor defense, our problem was scoring. Streit was 4-22-26 on the PP and totaled 9-36-45. I am all for trading for assets but who takes over the PP if he goes? He has a goal or assist on almost 50% of our PP goals.

And I did make a mistakes above and our defense did statistically stink as well as the offense. The list was reversed so we are actually the 7th worst defense.

Only 7 teams were at least 20% on the PP. Streit would immediately have an impact on quite of teams PP. Losing him makes a bad defense worse and a good PP worse. The return would have to at least a 1st and possibly a prospect if the pick is over 20.

I'll also be curious to see what the defense looks like next year. I wonder what kind of impact Gudas will have, and I wonder how many / if any of the younger guys will win a spot.

I think Radko Gudas will bring a huge impact because quite frankly, I think this defense is soft as shit and nobody does it enough on a consistent basis(the problem with Nicklas Grossmann is that he's too slow to do it consistently) - I'm not saying you have to run out of position to hit guys or even hit all the time, but you need to do it once in a while to keep them honest - that was my issue with Braydon Coburn, he didn't need to hit all the time but he didn't do it enough to keep teams honest - I think Radko Gudas will make a difference in that department - teams don't fear the Flyers like they used to and it doesn't have to be a fear of guys who hit hard and what not, I just want players on the team who are hard to play against, whether it's d-men who hit hard or forwards who play strong two way games and make it difficult on the opposing forwards - there's too much predictability and not enough players who are willing to things differently in order to give theirselves a chance at success

FIFM (fixed it for myself)

Upgrade Defense.

If MDZ signs we have 7 NHL players. I would think Morin would have a serious shot to be better then most of those 7. Manning is a better and cheaper solution for 3rd pairing. Streit is an expensive luxury. We have the 3rd best PP and this had a lot to do with Streit. Moving Streit would clear some serious cap space but doesn't make us that much better unless a "top" FA is signed to replace him. I don't think that would be a good idea. Grossmann and Shultz can continue as 2nd pairing guys. I don't know what to expect from Gudas other than being a top 6 guy. A Mac is not tradable and a buyout would be a hard nut to swallow. Schenn for a mid round draft pick would not weaken this core.

In the wings. As we know injuries are a big part of this game. The Phantoms should be pretty deep with Morin, Ghost, Hagg Alt and Manning. I thought that both Ghost and Morin we better than some of those that made the final roster. Ghost needs some weight and upper body strength. Since he had a knee injury, I would be very surprised if he didn't work the upper body very hard while rehabbing. Hopefully he makes a 100% recovery.

Out look.

Not as bad as I thought all season. Our problem was scoring and defense. We were 22 in scoring and 23 against. After years of solid PK, we really stunk this year. If the forwards we have would play to there ability, we would be a middle of the pack playoff team. Add a real top 6 LW and we can have a season to enjoy and hopefully get to see some of the top prospects play at this level.

If MDZ signs we have no spots unless/until someone gets injured. A younger guy would have to be a top 6 or stays in the minors. I think Morin is a top 4 already.

I wonder if that's by design. I don't think any of the prospects would be hindered by spending a year with the phantoms.

I do like the 'Gold' idea. That would make for some pretty fun games between non-playoff teams at the end of the season I think. And it would be sorta fair because the bad teams get eliminated so early.

Would make for a pretty boring trade deadline though probably. As the writer suggested. Teams wouldn't sell off as many parts if they knew they needed to win games to get the top picks.

I think as is, really isn't that bad. This is an isolated incident I think. Pretty rare to have 2 players of this caliber in the same draft, and as long as there is any incentive to finish last (high draft pick) people will talk about losing on purpose. Regardless of how the actual picks are decided.

Maybe they should have a playoff of the non playopff teams to see who could get the first pick. LOL

These injuries seem to be happening more often than the old days. Wonder what they are going to do to prevent them.

eventually they'll probably mandate full face shields, which isn't a bad thing at all IMO. I would wear one if I played hockey. full cage or at least the full visor/chin guard that you see some guys have

That would formally mean the end of fighting. Do you see the league going in that direction in the near future? I know they've implemented rules to reduce the frequency, but I think ending it altogether would be a tough sell from a marketing perspective.

I do. Fighting is already wayyyy down. A few more years and fights will happen once a month. Nobody will even notice it's gone at that point I think.

I must say I like fighting every now and then. For me just the threat of a fight makes the game a little more exciting.

When Jake has multiple fights and PEB and Laughton have fought, I think fighting will be around for a long time. Heavy weights are a dying breed, but its too rough of a game to eliminate it all.

I am truly amazed at Masons season. 16-17-11 2.22 GAA (8th) and .928 S% (3rd). They started keeping Save % in 1982 and the Flyers record for a season is .925. Any guesses?

Add in how much our defense and PK have sucked. If there is any blame on Mason it would be that he has single handedly kept us from drafting Connor McDavid.
