14. Berube is keeping his thoughts to himself, but it’s clear he’s not comfortable with his No. 1 netminder. The team steadfastly denies goalie coach Jeff Reese was fired because he objected to the way the club handled Mason’s injuries. (Reese has declined to comment. All he’s said is, “I loved being a Flyer and have nothing bad to say about them.”)

Mason is Philadelphia’s best and most consistent player. They’ve been so bad on the road that he’s got two shutouts, but lost both games in shootouts. Does Berube think Mason pulled the chute? Does he think Mason’s given up goals at brutal times, like the one with 15 seconds left in regulation against Boston that led to the killer defeat of Philadelphia’s season?

Does he think Mason’s been too critical in some recent comments about the Flyers’ play in front of him? It’s tough to say, but the coach sure looked like someone who was fed up.

How could he NOT be comfortable with him as a goalie? Did Mase rustle his jimmies because Mase told the truth about the team and Chief can't handle it? What a maroon

agree 100%. I don't even see how you could argue that someone other than Mason has been their best player this year. It's leaps and bounds between him and the rest of the pack.

And his numbers aren't just 'best on a bad team' caliber either. He's right around the top 10 in GAA and sv% among goalies that have started a legit amount of games. Counting W-L on an individual is the dumbest thing in sports.

Also, since the start of November, his even strength save % is second to only Carey Price, who very well will end up winning the Hart

lol, timmy p is ridiculous.

'How ironic is it that it comes on the 40th anniversary of their last cup win?'

well.. that was a day during the year, and this is a day during the year.. to my knowledge, march 24th comes around every year, and some stuff happened on both of those occassions? so, not ironic at all?

also I'm just not buying that brooby and mase are cool with each other. the philly media is ridiculous and always has been, but there's no way Berube calling Mason out after loses, but not anyone else, doesn't create a strained relationship. Nobody likes being blamed for shit that isn't their fault.

Agreed

I'd be done with someone if they kept blaming me for shit that wasn't my fault

Berube is good as gone. He should be fired today and not after the season is over. Start preparing for the offseason and focus on next season. If at all possible, target who the next coach will be. Try to unload Vinny and the other insane contracts that Homer got this organization in shit.

Since the Phantoms season is close to being over, they might as well get rid of Chief and let Terry Murray run the ship for the last eight games - at the very least he might be able to instill a bit of defensive ability to this team, even if he's not around after this season

I'm a huge fan of Terry Murray. Always have and always will. I support this 100% if Hexy can Chief. These guys can learn a ton under Murray. Btw, I love the fact that our prospects playing for the Phantoms are learning from Murray. If Murray isn't offered the Flyers job, I hope and pray he stays with the Phantoms.
If I had it my way as Flyers GM ( lol), my next coach would be 1) Babcock or 2) Julien 3) Murray.. But I'd be happier with my first two and keep Murray down in the AHL and help developing our future.

Agreed - only thing is, Terry Murray is not an offensive guy and the Flyers lack offense already so I don't know if he would help that, but he would be a good stop gap coach if they can't find someone bigger

I understand he's not an offensive style coach. I was more leaning toward our young defense of Morin, Gost, etc can learn a ton under him. But yeah, our scoring has been dreadful this season. Really only Wayne Train, G, and Voracek were solid. Read was disappointing, B Schenn was streaky it seemed.
I'm thinking some things will shake up a bit leading up to the draft. Both Schenn's may be dealt? Grossman possibly, depending on health? Nobody will want the contracts of Andy Mac or Vinny.. Unless Hexy laces some GMs Martini with some kind of special Kool Aid mix :)

They need to make a move - both Schenn's need to go, they've exhausted their potential and they need to find a winger somehow - I was reading something about maybe Justin Williams but I'm not sure if that will happen or not

There needs to be a mass exodus of players this offseason - I know people talk about patience and that's true but this has largely been the same roster the last 3 years or so - the players they have brought in besides Steve Mason in that timeframe since have not made any positive impact

Shit.. Justin Williams brings back memories of how stupid this organization has been in the past for trading solid prospects for older players. I can't remember who was involved when we traded Justin? I was pissed when he was dealt, and I knew he was going to be a very good player one day. Don't get me going on the Patrick Sharp trade... This shitshow better change.. I'd love to bring back Justin Williams. I'm happy for him winning a cup.

Wasn't it Danny Markov? Or am I thinking about another move?

That sounds about right.. I'm too lazy to look it up. Anyhow, you see what I'm getting at? This organization has to change it's way of doing business. I think Hexy is a great addition to changing that. He learned a lot under Lombardi.

I think this offseason will be real important - and I think more than anything, they need to change the culture and get guys who are excited about playing the game - I just think there are too many players who are going out there and just cashing their check and nothing more than that - not enough heart and desire - the fact that they've completely torpedoed since the Boston game tells me that this team needs a culture change - they need players who are tougher to play against, and it's not always about physical play, it's about guys who are smart and can out-think the other team - don't be so predictable, make the other team have to react - too many times the Flyers are reacting to the other team instead of the other way around

Considering where the Flyers are in the standings, I would be looking to move Mark Streit to get a third first round pick - they need to accumulate a bunch of assets - either keep those picks, or move up in the draft or use those picks to make trades for players who can be difference makers - I don't know if Hexy is going to go after higher salaried players, but I'm sure there are younger players who can be available in trades

I never thought about trading Streit? He's worth a 1st rounder. There are some good quality players in this draft. I was just on the NHL main board to check out the thread on the Bruins being toast. You may have nailed it. It looks like they are done. Julien may get the axe? Impounder if we have the players he lIkes or if he would want to coach the Fluers?
