From SI.com:

Analysis

Theo Riddick is a classic "jack of all trades, master of none." While he shows a willingness to run inside he struggles to change speeds effectively and is too easily taken down by the initial tackler. He is a polished route runner for a RB and displays excellent hands, but he lacks the speed and burst to be a threat to take the top off the defense once out in space. When asked to pass block, he is quick to diagnose and attack his assignment with proper base and leverage, but he lacks the bulk and strength to consistently sustain his blocks. Riddick will likely get a training camp opportunity because if he can add bulk to his frame he could develop into a versatile third down back and special teams player, but he as a result of his athletic limitations he is unlikely to be drafted and will need to find a home through free agency.

Alright! A freaking guy from my list! Now you're getting it Mayhew.

Big 'ol (6'5", 280lbs) blocking TE who should slide into Heller's role. Supposed to be a good athlete for his size, soft hands, too.

But his run blocking is his best attribute from what I've gathered...

and as a bama guy he may be a little more pro ready than some of the other TE's out there. With Scheff and Pettigrew becoming FA's after this year, this guy has a good opportunity. Hopefully he makes something of it.

I disagree -- He has good size, but he is slower than molasses and lacks upper body strength (only 11 reps with 225). Williams would have been laughed out of the combine if he would have received an invite. He ran a 5.40 at his pro day, which means he really runs in the 5.5 to 5.6 range. What I don't get is -- the guy has a 36" vertical, yet can't run a lick.

kreton -- there isn't a chance in hell that michael williams takes over the role of Scheff or Pettigrew. he is the furthest from a pass catching TE you will find in this draft. he will strictly be used as a run blocking TE.

If we took this guy in the 3rd or 4th I might agree with you Mike, but he is a 7th round pick. He can block, and he can catch. He may not have the breakaway speed, but as a 7th rounder if he helps keep Staff up and opens some holes, he has the same value as Heller. On the receiving end if he catches it I am happy. If he cant run after, oh well. Again 7th round pick who has the potential to contribute. This was a solid pick.

Pettigrw is the furthest thing from a pass catching TE the Lions have ever had. NO way does this guy have shittier hands than pettigrew.

as i said -- he will be used strictly as a blocking TE and he may catch a few ball in a goal line situation. as far as taking over for Scheff and Pettigrew -- no chance. i like that he came from alabama and is a smart player. The fact he ran basically the same 40 times as 340 lb Larry Warford doesn't bode well for a TE. LOL.

Is Reddick really going to be that much better than Kevin Smith? Why pass up better value players for this. We really did not need another pass catching RB anyway. We have Bush and Bell already. Wasted pick here too.

Williams will at least fill a role on the offense. He will be the blocking TE. With Heller gone and Reiff starting at LT they had a void to fill. At least this one makes some sense.

You don't like our athletic young tackles? I think they each have more potential and higher ceilings then the guys who they are replacing.

He is slow, but he doesn't have to be quick. I dont care how much we target him, or what he does after the catch. First things first, he has to catch it. He seemingly caught the catchable balls in college and thats what matters. And the run blocking, probably our biggest issue on offense, is addressed with a 7th round pick. Again, we took him in the 7th round. The 7th.
