i really just worry about Niskanen pulling a Ville Leino. Has one breakout, dominant season, gets a huge pay day, and then plays albatross.

I hear you, but if Timonen retires (mixed feelings about it) I just don't see a better or even decent top 4 UFA option out there, which means dipping into the trade market and creating holes elsewhere. But, if the right deal is out there...would it be better to perhaps do something like trade Schenn for Yandle and then sign a forward like Jokinen to replace him?

i definitely think BSchenn is the most movable, valuable, piece the flyers have. they have a surplus at center, need a top 6 winger and a dman. i like a schenn for yandle move personally. this is probably my favorite option of the 3.

i think i'd risk going with streit/coburn, macdonald/schenn, grossmann/gus (gilbert) before signing niskanen. i really think he's going to get $5mil+ for 5 years+ and i really don't think that's a good idea.

if they can get him around 4 mil, for like 3 years, i'm all for it. but the top UFA dman ALWAYS gets overpaid.

I certainly thought Gus would be further along in his development at this point than he is. I was obviously wrong. He finished the 11-12 season so strong, particularly in the playoffs, but then hasn't been able to consistently recapture that form since.

Without a doubt this would be the best move they could make

I like Matt Niskanen but he's not worth a long term deal when you have Ghost, Sam Morin and Robert Hagg waiting in the wings - by the time those guys are all ready, you'll still be paying Matt Niskanen

I wouldn't put it against Ghost making the team next year, I could see it - but who knows

the problem is we really haven't had a good chance to see him. the glut of 3-4 dmen that the flyers have had has kept him out of the lineup. based on what we've seen from him, he should be the 7th or 8th dman, and it's been that way all season. mesz, grossmann, schenn, macdonald, and streit are all more deserving. doesn't necessarily mean he shouldn't / couldn't be the flyers 6th dman though. there just hasn't been the opportunity for him to have that sink/swim moment.

I think part of that is that he's not being played consistently enough because of their supposed guys that they have on the top six as far as offensive d-men and defensive d-men - Gus would be further along if they actually played him every night like he should

i love ghost, but i dont want to have that expectation that he could make the big club next year. i'm hoping he goes pro and plays for the phantoms, but even that's not a guarantee. anything more i would be thrilled obviously.

Booby Mac was just on NHL Tonight talking about Evander Kane. Said that Winnipeg is committed to him, but the question needs to be asked this summer if Kane is committed to Winnipeg.

I'm really against any big trades for a while, but Kane would be so damn beautiful in orange and black. He and Pacioretty are the two non-superstars that I want next to G. I can dream.

He'd have to fix his attitude issues before he comes on this team

have never heard of any attitude problems with him, what are you referring to?

Just search for "Evander Kane attitude problems" and you'll have no shortage of articles to read.

getting some stuff from last year but nothing recent.

i mean it sounds like the guy wants to win and he keeps getting moved around and playing for shit teams.

if they want to move him the flyers should be interested.

I wasn't judging either way, just pointing out that there have been plenty of articles about his "attitude". Can't say I've followed the situation close enough to really have an opinion.

I'm sorry, but Kane hasn't done enough for me yet. I know he's only 22, but this is his fifth season and I'm only seeing one strong year of production (not this or last season either, when he's had way more minutes to work with).

Yeah, he shoots the puck a lot, but his shooting percentage is terrible. I don't know if we need a younger, less polished, less accurate version of Jeff Carter on the wing.

That said, let's keep this conversation going. It will go a long way toward us getting to 10K if we stop making threads and post here instead...lol

Haha!! The problem is that I think we have better conversations in the separate threads....

Maybe it can be 10,000 TOTAL posts in a year, instead of just in this one? :noidea:

Nope, it's got to be 10K in this thread by the end of our postseason run or it's useless to us.

i hear what youre saying, but i dont like the comparison to carter. same speed, same shot, but kane is more of a power guy than a finesse guy, unlike carter.

Here is the list of current NHL players who scored 30 goals in a season at age 20: Alexander Ovechkin, Steven Stamkos, Ryan Smyth, Jaromir Jagr, Jonathan Toews, Evgeni Malkin, Anze Kopitar, Patrice Bergeron, Marian Gaborik.

from: 30 Thoughts: Evander Kane too valuable for Jets to give up on | Hockey | CBC Sports

obviously it depends what you pay for him, but if you can get him below his value, i think you do it. the only difference between the guys listed above, and kane, is the fact that kane plays with a medicore at best team, instead of on stanley cup contending teams. put him with talent and who knows what could happen.

heh, this used to be used for just BS'ing about the day.. but probably 90% of the guys that used it, aren't here any more, so it fails miserably haha
