Here's the game. You post two players from any era in MLB. For the sake of this thread, we're only looking at MLB performance, so don't add anything to a player like Monte Irvin because of his ***** League performance. After you post the two players, without looking any stats or anything up, you immediately say which one you think is a better player. It is perfectly fair (and good) to account for war time, era played in, etc. After you post your answer, you post two new players. You can look up the players afterward and see if your memory and intuition holds up to which player you picked. No cheating! I'll start it out. Since I'm the first one, I won't be answering any players. Here we go:

Mel Ott or Roy Campanella?

Mel Ott. Unless you need a catcher.

Mickey Mantle vs Tris Speaker.

(if you don't know either player at all, don't post. just waste until you at least recognize the two player's names and know something, no matter how small, about them)

Tris Speaker

UL Washington or Roy Smalley

Smalley and it's not even close

Edit: I was going to add my two names but I see now that someone got in ahead of me.

Gubicza.

Jimmy Wynn or Reggie Smith
Looking at the stats now, it's even hard to say. They're very similar, but Smith played longer. I'm still going Smith

What is the point of "This or That" threads? It doesnt encourage any conversation or debate.

Sure it does. You guess which player was better, then afterwards it's fun to see if you were right or wrong. In a society that is so used to just checking a player's Fangraph page to determine their value, this thread relies solely on one's memory and/or intuition.

:noidea:

I find that these types of threads just go on tit-for-tat and rarely if ever get sidetracked to an actual discussion.

Either way, just MHO, so carry on...

You can also have a discussion with yourself, and think about why you were wrong when you were wrong and what types of players and skill sets you might subconsciously be underrating and overrating.
