The past decade has seen a lot more exposure to European soccer by the average Canadian. Coverage of the Champions League, EPL and World Cup/Euro is on par with other sports programming that sees medium-strength popularity (NBA Playoffs, World Series) in this country. Municipalities have spent considerable money building multi-purpose (indoor and outdoor) soccer facilities as a revenue generator, and seen success with that model not only via adult rec leagues but also by expanding the youth development programs. Coaches are brought over from Europe to show the kids how the youngsters in soccer-crazy countries train and develop, and try their hardest to inch the youth here toward that level.
Maybe this is just a blip, but maybe they're finally getting somewhere? I know the England team at the very least was weakened by the U-21's being called up for a match v Portugal, but beating the States and Russia seems legit.
i wasnt looking for an answer to my "question" lol
but since you got into it ... you left out MLS residency programs ... all goal scorers in the Canada u20 european tour games were products of cdn MLS residency team programs
the 16 17 and 18 year old cdn kids who once didnt get the shot to go over to europe now have teams to play on that are playing in competitive league games against the other MLS residency teams across north america
whitecaps had 5 starters in the england game
