can't understand why its $70.00
$15.00 for the new filter and $55 charge for labor for taking the old one out, throwing it in the trash. Opening the new filter package, removing the new filter, throwing away the packaging and putting the new filter in the glove box. I'm dead nuts serious. You get an hour charge for any work outside of a reduced oil change charge. Really surprised you were only charged $10 a tire for the rotation.

Yes Please, No Thank You.

About to head back to NH middle of May, My Subie has 71,190 miles on so I decided to get the 72k mile service done before I leave two. Got the text. $89 Oil Change, $35 Tire Rotation. $70 for the cabin filter.

Yes Please Oil Change

Yes Please Tire Rotation

No Thank You Cabin Filter. It takes less than 10 min and most people can do this themselves. I have told you all before I have no mechanical skills. But I watched a Youtube video on this process and can't understand why its $70.00
They know that "X" amount of people will pay it without thought. I've come to accept a sad truth: it's not about finding trust, but searching for whoever lies the least. Competition is fierce, transparency seems to allow a less ethical competitor room to slide in. Therefore it all becomes a giant hidden upsell game.

You can't stop doing business with everyone.

Especially women. Breathing dirty air is as bad as a dirty window. Put it on my card and forget about it. It's an easy sale for many dealers and oil change shops. 5 Minute oil change is a forty five minute wait and fifteen minutes while they make the upgrade oil pitch, new cabin filter pitch and the 'Drain the radiator and refill with new heat resistant fluid that's good for the next 60,000 miles.' Up north is a -35 degree upgrade that you'll never have to worry about as long as you own the car.

Agreed. I will get every service done by Subaru; it just makes sense to me. I get OEM parts, certified mechanic and peace of mind. I have a friend Old retired mechanic, my 60k service was about $800.00 part of which was changing plugs or something I asked him about doing it, he said let Subaru do it. He would need a special tool and have to work around the turbo radiator, said it was a lot. So at that point I made my determination, stop being cheap do things the correct way.

I think that's key. We each need to figure out where to place our own stakes for peace of mind. Peace of mind, aka stress management. Stress is a human survival response, but we can't respond to every situation like we're being attacked by a mountain lion.

A lot of people do not realize how bad stress is. I have a guy I work with, stresses about every damn thing. I tell him, dude you are 60 year old over weight diabetic and you let everything stress you out. My quote to him " Don't stress about things you cannot control"

When they put together the estimate, there are some line items that are a cash cow.
If you say yes to a $70 filter you can get on Amazon for $10, that is a "stupid tax"

The Ford dealer service sucks in my town.
I drive 40 miles to Columbus to get my oil changed.
I went to a "mechanic" in Lagrange and the kid put dirty water in the window washer fluid.
I went to a mechanic I trust here and the kid put the wrong oil in my truck.
I have a twin turbo engine that runs klike a raped ape. I get the service at the dealer because these turbos are sensitive.
My truck will outlast mre if some dumbass doesnot fuck up the turbos or the timing chains......

Yeah the dealership matters. and in all honesty I have never gotten better service than I do from Subaru or at least my local dealership. They have earned my trust but I still want final say on things like that

I have always changed my own oil. Except my company trucks...but personal vehicles I buy Synthetic oil and top brand oil filters. Peace of mind.
Yes Please Tire Rotation
Yeah, that's easier for them. I have been buying my tires at Discount Tire which comes with life time balance and rotation.

Yeah...it's a rip off. $10 filter that they charge you $25 for and half an hour labor to do a 3 minute job.

What synthetic oil do you use?
"top brand" oil filters? Ford F150 uses a special oil filter. Use a "top brand" and you can destroy your timing chain. Very expensive!
I buy my tires local. They give me good service and good prices.

Back in 2021 my 2014 Lincoln MKT had a recall. Wife and I had rented a place in Panama City for Jan. and Feb. and the dealer said, "Bring it on when you get home. We got back in March and I brought it in. The recall was to replace the water pump. It was a four day recall.

1. The engine had to be pulled out.
2. The engine had to be completely dismantled because the water pump was in the center of the engine.
3. Replace the pump with the new one.
4. Reassemble.
5. Fifty mile road test.

The engine is pulled, it's completely disassemble and I get the call. Mr. BK, since we have the engine apart, would you consider replacing every moving part, including the internal timing chain. My question. What will it cost me? Since we have all of the parts on hand and we have the engine apart, there will be zero labor and we will charge you cost only to us for the parts. $880 and your engine will brand new. And Lincoln will warrantee every part and labor for as long as you own the car. Only thing you have to do is have the oil changed at a Lincoln or Ford dealership so that it can be recorded and verified.

I did it and haven't had a single engine problem.

Did have to spend $2780 last month to replace the entire front end(struts, brakes, shocks, bearings, etc. on both sides). Ten-year warrantee on that. Good until I'm 85. It's the wife's car now so I don't complain.

What synthetic oil do you use?
Mobil 1 right now. It's available everywhere and good oil too. Amzoil or Redline may be better, but it's not as readily available. My Explorer I used 0W-20 in place of 5W-20 and just sold it with 275k miles. That 302 was still running like a top. Autolite iridium plugs, Motorcraft wires. Motorcraft or OEM for anything I couldn't find something better than factory. 0W-30 in my SHO where 5W-30 is recommended. Same in the wife's Jeep GC and daughters Cadillac ATS.
"top brand" oil filters? Ford F150 uses a special oil filter. Use a "top brand" and you can destroy your timing chain. Very expensive!
Usually Mobil 1 because AutoZone or Advanced will have the oil and filter combo sale. If the filter is not available I will go with Purolator Pure 1. My SHO uses the same 3.5 Twin Turbo as your F-150. Very Similar anyway.
I buy my tires local. They give me good service and good prices.
As you should.
