So my vide today is a question. Sometimes people get caught up in the music, or the rythmn of a song the flow and delivery and never really listen intently to the lyrics. Or perhaps never fully understood the lyrics. Would this song today be realeased if it were done today and would it see any air play.

Not For The Woke.
The Stones would immediately be called racist and 80% of the left owned radio stations would never play it.

I'm your Venus, I'm your private joy Messiah.

Well the Catholic Church would lose there shit if they listened Like a little prayer by Madonna.

But yeah I cannot see Brown Sugare being released with those lyrics.

Gold Coast slave ship bound for cotton fields
Sold in the market down in New Orleans
Skydog slaver knows he's doin' all right ( Scarred Ole Slaver) not Skydog slaver it was a copy and past
Hear him whip the women just around midnight

Brown sugar, how come you taste so good?
Brown sugar, just like a young girl should

Drums beatin' cold, English blood runs hot
Lady of the house wonderin' when it's gonna stop
House boy knows that he's doin' all right
You should have heard him just around midnight

Brown sugar, how come you taste so good, now?
Brown sugar, just like a young girl should (yeah)

Brown sugar, how come you dance so good, babe?
Brown sugar, just like a black girl should, yeah

And I bet your mama was a tent show queen
And all her boyfriends were sweet sixteen
I'm no school boy but I know what I like
You should have heard them just around midnight

Brown sugar, how come you taste so good, baby?
Brown sugar, just like a young girl should, yeah

I said, yeah, yeah, yeah, woo
How come you, how come you dance so good?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, woo
Just like a, just like a black girl should
Yeah, yeah, yeah, woo

It probably would not be released today in our current climate but I fear for the future of arts and artists. Artists should be able to create whatever they desire without fear of retribution or being "canceled" or whatever. We don't know their intent. Art represents the world soul and its history. The lyrics you quoted show a thought that at least once existed so it has a place regardless of whether or not it is in good taste. Erasing history is a really bad idea IMO.

I agree erasing history is a horrible idea but it's happening. And I suspect the Stone were just telling a side of history the schools did not want to teach. Of course at the time Mick was tapping a sistah so I feel she at least was the muse.

Exactly. And honestly, we should want our artists to explore the darker sides of human nature and history and bring as many perspectives to the forefront as possible. There's a lot of emotion in that shit and a lot to think about. If an artist or musician pisses you off because of their perspective on a particular issue or topic, all the better.

Absolutely Frank Zappe said " A mind is like a parachute, it only works if it's open" love that quote. I love the song writers like Dylan, Neil Young, Seger and many others. Dylan was hated by my parents generation but he brought about some awareness with his writing

One of my favorite songs from my favorite band.

They played Nashville a year and a half ago at Titans Stadium. My sister and BIL came down for fall break and I bought 6 tickets. My wife and I didn't tell our kids or sister and BIL, just surprised them. Drove to Nashville to "Just go listen to some music".
They didn't pick up on it until we were in the stadium, my Brother in Law just stops and his head went back and forth " Are we really at a Rolling Stones Concert?!"
Yeah buddy, I gotcha!

What a fantastic night.

Too bad they took this song off the playlist though.

I can't believe some of the lyrics to the rap crap the kids listen to.
Not in my house.

Anyone gonna go see "I Want to Dance"..........??

Whitney Houston may have had the most beautiful singing voice ever. She may have had a fucked up life, but she could sing.

Music is powerful.
You can't listen to it all day without it having an impact on the way you/they think.
I remember the stuff we listened to in 60's and esrly 70's.
It certainly impacted my generation......

I saw the Stones in the mid-aughts. They played the song and it was the worst of what I thought was a disappointing concert. They kept pandering to the audience turning every other song into a crowd-sharing anthem, with Brown Sugar being the worst of them. Maybe I'm too much a Stones fan to appreciate the "showmanship" above the music.

I saw the Stones in the early 80's.
They lacked passion at the time. The only folks getting off on it were hardcore fans.
J Geils stole the show!
