That is not a Christmas movie. The theme of the movie is not Christmas. Nevertheless, a very good movie.

I put quotations around "Christmas" for a reason.

If you want to take it a step further, movies like "A Christmas Story", "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation", "Elf" and "The Santa Clause" are not Christmas movies either because they have absolutely nothing to do with the birth of Christ.

This new way of observing Christmas caught on around the world, and even countries that were primarily made up of other religions began to celebrate in the same way.

I was in Hong Kong 2 Christmas's ago and was amazed at how big a holiday Christmas had become.

My church's (and most other Christian church's) church year begins with Advent the beginning of December and follows through Christ's birth, life, death, transfiguration, etc. as we pass through the calendar. I celebrate Christ's birth on December 25th because that's when it falls in the church year.

Christians began celebrating Christ's birth in December around the 4th century. There's no documentation on when Pagans began celebrating Yule, so to say one started before the other is unfounded speculation.
The Yule festival celebrated the Winter Solstice. The solstice itself falls a few days before the 25th. Both celebrations were independently fun and festive.

Around the 15th century, northern Europeans of both factions began incorporating the other's celebrations into their own celebrations. From there, the celebrations evolved into what they are today - with really none of any of the factions staying true to their meaning for the celebration. Christians celebrate Santa Claus, Pagans sing "Joy to the World" and no one really cares about the winter solstice anymore. To say the Christian church hijacked the 25th as a marketing ploy is a spun fallacy; although Christians have most certainly succumb to the commercialism and greed that shrouds the season today.

Personally, I actually enjoy Easter a lot more than I enjoy Christmas and consider Easter much more important.

the whole Christmas & Christmas Trees & such actually are a pagan ritual that Christians incorporated to convert Pagans into Christianity.

Also if I remember correctly (I am not religious) I believe there is a similar reason as why you see church on Sundays instead of the sabbath. (Sat)

This is how the origin of Christmas is spun by atheists and disgruntled Pagans. Many Christians say the same thing about Pagans hijacking Christmas.

If you are diligent in your own research and want to cut through the spin and agendas from all sides, you will find that it wasn't a straight hijacking by either side, but a gradual unification by incorporating each other's celebrations into their own.

Watched The Disaster Artist last night. Hard pic to review. Very weird. It's about an extremely weird guy who after numerous rejections decides to make a movie himself called "The Room." This actually is a real movie. The movie is a total disaster and considered one of the worst movies ever made. The movie is so bad (The Room) that it eventually becomes a cult film and still is today.

James Franco deserves an Oscar nomination for his performance. He is great as a man with a crazy accent, an unlimited bankroll and an aversion to revealing where he was born or how old he is. Best I can give this picture is a B+, which is pretty good. It got an A in the Dallas Morning News. Franco's younger brother, Dave, and Seth Rogan are part of the cast.

The Hitman's Bodyguard - 2 out of 5 stars. I was disappointed in this one as I thought Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L Jackson would've had better chemistry. Typical buddy cop type premise. Wait until it goes on premium cable to watch it or if you get a free code from Redbox or whatnot.

Rented it for $3 on Saturday.

I've seen worse.

The Darkest Hour. Wife and I went to see it Thursday. This is the story of England and Winston Churchill during the time the army is trapped on the shores of Dunkirk in France. A great performance by Gary Oldham as Churchill could be an Academy Award winning performance. The prosthetics on his face make him truly unrecognizable.

Considering there are no actual war scenes, this movie is very fast paced driven by the main character who dominates the screen from start to finish. The audience is easily able to detect the hopelessness of the situation with the entire army trapped in Dunkirk. All sides except Churchill himself beg him to ask for peace through the Italians negotiating for Hitler.

This is a feel good movie without being sappy. A solid A

Murder On The Orient Express (2017)

I did not see the original or read the book; I'm glad I didn't. This movie had more humor than I thought it would have. It had everything: humor, poignancy, terror, and the examination of the human condition - and yet it's a simple movie at its core. Director Kenneth Branagh did a fine as the lead character Detective Hercule Poirot, although I'm unfamiliar with the character. I love period pieces. It's only doing 65% on RT right now. It must be because of the films unoriginal nature, or not approving of how Poirot was portrayed. Dunno. This is the 15th movie of 2017 I've seen, and probably my 2nd favorite behind Baby Driver. These are the only 2 I've given A's to. I'm grading this in a vacuum:

Murder on the Orient Express. Not really worth it. I gave it a C+. Looked more like a play than a movie. Great cast, mostly wasted. Looks like another one is going to be made since Hercule was sent to the Nile at the end of the movie.

Likely so...since the original led to a sequel. That old broad Agatha Christie can write some shit brah

I apologize, I’ve been somewhat busy the last month. I will post all the films I have seen, in the order I saw them, since I last posted in this thread about The Right Stuff (3/5 stars). I’m pretty sure this is all of them. Since I’m going to bed, I will not post any comments/reviews on the films, because there are so many. Maybe tomorrow I’ll comment on what I thought about each movie. I imagine some of my ratings won’t be popular; luckily, I am reminded of the fact that movie ratings are completely subjective
