I thought it took 5 full innings to make a game official regardless. At least that's how I always understood it but I could be wrong.

If the home team is winning then it's a game. The home team doesn't need to bat in the 9th. Same as the bottom of the 5th.

It makes no sense to me that 5 innings has to be completed in order to have a "official game." But I'm pretty sure that's the rule.

Like you, if the home team is ahead, why is the last 1/2 inning of any significance?
