I don't think Steely Dan is overrated at all. I've never heard of them referred to as one of the best.

I've heard them likened to "misunderstood geniuses" or some such. Mainly because their lyrics are so indecipherable.

I like about half a dozen of their songs but most of them put me to sleep.

I used to hit the city after midnight when working during college.....The Slaughtered Lamb is where the Peculiar Pub used to be before they moved to Bleecker St.....We would hit that Greek place Karavas which was on West 4th for a drunken gyro sandwich before heading home....Good times....
