Interesting on Worilds...sounds like the NYG were interested, but not at his price...starting to looks as if he might come back under $30 mil...if it happens.

Report: Giants Think Steelers LB Jason Worilds Is Asking For Too Much Money

Lol... Glad others are seeing it that way. I'm sure Philly will still take the bait

This will blow you guys away......

Ex-Steelers LB Jason Worilds shockingly retires - NFL.com

I mean, WTF do we make of this????

Is this his way of holding out till the Steelers decide to knock on his door??? This is just fuckin insane!!

Blindsided!

Makes me wonder if his plan was "Pittsburgh or Bust" all along? Crazy that he would walk away from the game in his prime and right before cashing in his biggest contract yet. Oh well! But one thing is for sure, he made a lot of money last year. If I made close to $12mil last year then I would probably retire too lol. Maybe he is deciding to walk away while he has his health and before the game starts to take its toll. Whatever the case, he earned his money and he's qualified for the NFL pension plan ($12k/yr or something like that). So he can live comfortably off his $13.5mil he accrued during his 5 seasons with the Steelers.

Too often we see players forced out of the game or clearly hung on a year or two too long...refreshing to see a young guy get out on his terms...agree with Face...I'm sure he managed that Tag contract well (after taxes he could've pocketed $6 mil easily, you would think)...plus the pension...as long as he doesn't risk too much of it, he should be fine.

I think he had a dollar figure in his mind that it was worth the grind for 3+ more yrs...and he didn't get it...Wish him well.

To the business side of it...this really doesn't change much for the Steelers...I don't see them or expect them to reach for any of the names out there on the FA market...OLB is thin, but if the 4-3 concept gets traction...they have more guys that will be able to play OLB in that scheme vs a 3-4....I'm thinking Shazier is going to get a lot of snaps on the outside.

Good for Worilds, he's still plenty young enough that he can have a real second career. That 10 million as a backup is a nice chunk of change.

Hell he could just invest the 12k every year and let that money build underneath him while living off the $6mil. There's a lot of easy ways he could go about financing his retirement that will make sure he stays retired.

But I agree, he definitely is making a good decision for his future. It's a bummer to the fans, but a lot of people don't really understand the physical & emotional demands of the sport. And if he had already made up his mind about it, then its a guarantee that he had a dollar figure he was set on if he was going to return. Probably set it in the "too much" category just to make the retirement decision easier for him.

27? Not injured, calling it a career? Rare in the NFL...but smart...there's a lot of guys that played in the league that are physically hindered in someway due to playing the game. The tag year really helped, but theoretically... I would think any 1st round draft pick that plays enough to be vested should be able to retire with money in the bank and very little debt.

Very true, even for a 2nd rounder like Worilds! But sad story is majority of these players turn out to be stupid when given vast amounts of money. Ever see the 30 for 30 film called "Broke"? Keith McCants, Bernie Kosar, Andre Rison... Millionaires that wound up broke! That list goes on and on! Lawrence Taylor, Dan Marino, Warren Sapp, Jamal Lewis, Travis Henry, Terrell Owens, Vince Young, JaMarcus Russell... All earned a MINIMUM of $20mil, some as high as $80mil during their careers.

Wouldn't doubt it. Most people that walk away during their prime don't quite extinguish that itch. Hopefully he has some good hobbies, because his "faith" alone isn't going to keep that itch at bay.

Can't say I'm sad to see Worilds go. Complete underachiever for that defense. Da Beard, on the other hand, I will miss.

Kinda sorta...he was overpaid as a tagged player, but that happens to most tagged players...he was a serviceable player...just so happens to be a lapse in talent at that position right now...he had perfect timing to cash in.

Yes, exactly. Sorry, should have been more clear.:suds: I hope (and expect) Jones to step it up next year, but as to Worilds, I saw some horrible stat about him having a total of one sack last year when he was going up against an offensive tackle. He would have commanded a relatively large price, for relatively little production, if that makes sense, given the particular role and opportunities for OLs in this system.

Da Beard will be missed, but it was time. They've delayed the inevitable for so long that a mass of youth was bound to happen...as it stands know...the DEF will be counting on at least 6 players with barely a 100 starts combined.

Worilds...Johnny on the spot...good for him...IMO, the strength of the DEF will be the DL and we'll see more 4 man DL fronts...putting a little less emphasis on 3-4 OLB pressure.

Steelers sign James Harrison to two-year deal - NFL.com

Deebo back under contract... Glad to see his presence brought back. Not to mention that pretty much shores up the barren desert that was the OLB position. Lemon & Moats are going to be hungry for snaps. That puts them at 5 OLB's on the roster? JJ, Harrison, Moats, Lemon, Hojo & Z-man (technically ILB, but he worked at OLB extensively LY).

I think they realized a little quicker than norm that JH would be just as effective and a lot cheaper than the Sheard's of the FA market. TN probably a real threat as well.

Good signing, as the article noted...hopefully they've not relying on him to be the savior.

From the sound of it, Deebo wanted back all along. He used TN to force PIT's hand. Good call on his part.

I agree that they definitely shouldn't be signing him to rely on him. He'll be productive in spot duty, where he should remain. Health is my main concern with the OLB group. I think JJ needs to bulk up to avoid injury. But we'll see how the defense looks. He could be much better and stay healthier in more 4-3 looks. Deebo is a ticking time bomb. His body isn't going to hold up much longer.
