Who are some players who will be FAs or players on the roster who shouldn't be very expensive to who you'd like to see signed to a long-ish-term deal?

Player(s) I definitely want:

One of the biggest priorities this offseason should be signing Chris Culliver to a contract extension IMO. Every team has to find a few Ray MacDonalds / Alex Boones on the roster to buy low in order to fill some needs without breaking the bank. Culliver is easily one of the most talented backups on the team, and he has the ability to play CB or FS.

Brock got a 4-year, 16 million dollar extension. I'd be willing to sign Culliver to something like that.

Ted Ginn. Pleeeeeeease come back! (not bloody likely)

Player(s) I'd consider:

Brett Keisel. 1-year deal. He's definitely bring some leadership & toughness to the D. Pittsburgh has a terrible cap situation.

Jay Ratlif. Niners should have signed him when Dallas cut him. Don't know how cheap he'd come.

Michael Huff. Should be pretty cheap.

Jacoby Ford. He can return kicks. Might make the roster; worth a shot.

Josh Morgan. A sad memory in the annals the 49ers. Him getting hurt before the playoffs cost the Niners more than people remember. :( I'd be willing to bring him back on the cheap.

Alex Smith. I know what you're thinking: :wtf2: I mean this guy:

And no the Chiefs' QB didn't get cut & then get a major tan. I'd be willing to let him compete with Garrett Celek for a spot. Plus I think all the news stories of the Niners signing Alex Smith would be pretty funny.

Which bargain-basement signing would you want the Niners to try?

I'm digging through the bin for seasoned ILBs with a little gas in the tank to help us out until Bow gets back....not convinced Willhoite is gonna be enough. London Fletcher? I wish Spikes was still kicking around. Someone else?

I read somewhere that the Chiefs might offer Alex Smith a new contract and more money

Can Moody be kicked inside? I'm pretty excited to see what he can do for us. I thought Skuta filled in nicely for Willis as well.

As far as kicking the bottom of the barrel, screw that. While we have an excellent to build this team for long term success, we NEED to win NOW, and we are built to do just that. We need to restructure everyone we can to free up as much cap room as possible. The only extension we need to worry about right now is Kaep. We can still keep his cap hit relatively low for the first year. We can transition tag Aldon the following year and franchise Crabs if we want to. Resign Dawson and Boldin, maybe Dixon and Wright.

VD can convince his bro to come here, we can take a one year flyer on Maclin or Danario or both. Hopefully we can use our draft picks on players who will actually play and be difference makers this year.

I want us to do everything we possibly can to get Frank and Justin a ring next year. We need to find some other veterans who are ring hungry who are willing to come in for a one year deal to get us over the hump.

Even great teams have players who don't start & rarely play but make a difference. They can't spend big money on everyone.

I would consider Keisel or Ratlft if they come in for the cheap. Obviously they are long in the tooth but they would make great depth rotation guys getting a handful of snaps a game. Wouldn't do both though as I expect/hope Tank gets the bulk of rotation between J.Smith and Ray Mac next season.

And the major wildcard on the D line is Okoye since it's unknown how ready he is for actual game action. I salivate at the thought of our D line if Tank lives up to the hype and we can get Okoye to be a football player to match his physical talent with an added bonus if Lemonier develops into a fearsome pass rusher.

I would pass on Jones since we have a ton of picks and I don't see any reason we can't burn one on just a return specialist. We could go cheaper and younger and maybe even better at the position.

Josh Morgan I would definitely pass on. Patton I believe fills the Morgan role on the team and the last thing we need is another possession WR. I would rather have Jones or even Ginn because at the very least those guys bring the speed we desperately need at the position.

Oh I'm not lookin' to replace Patton by any means. But if it's between Morgan and a guy like Brandon Carswell or Jon Baldwn I think Morgan might be able to crack the 53.

Morgan can make the roster but we barely get Patton on the field as it is so I would think it's better to draft one or two WRs who'll be cheaper and at least have ST value.

I agree with the mentality of scrapping the bottom of the barrel for guys on the cheap and rolling the dice as being good at that is part of how you stay good for an extended period in the salary cap era. But if you're not going to really get any contributions from the guy it's just a waste of space and I just don't see Morgan contributing anything to the team.

I'd rather fill all the backup roles / special teams needs with the 13 draft picks we have.
Cheaper and younger talent.

Maybe add a piece here or two (like we added Skuta and Osgood for special teams last year). Maybe this year it's a return guy to compete with James.

We don't have to spend big money on everyone. We have a team that built to win but are missing a few key pieces. I don't want us to fill our secondary and WR core with a bunch of scrubs who may or may not make a difference. We are stacked everywhere else, we need to get players who will put us over the top at those positions. We haven't overspent at any position at all in the last decade. If it takes us sacrificing a couple million in dead money in 2015 and 2016 to win a Super Bowl in 2014 would it not be worth it? There is a plethora of talent in FA to fill our two biggest weaknesses.

We have 42 guys under contract next year that are essentially uncuttable, at least 13 draft picks and the ability to move enough cap space to sign anyone we possibly without really jeopardizing our core.

Vernon, Bowman, Willis, Brooks, McDonald, and Staley will not be going anywhere anytime soon. Our front office has been brilliant about their cap management so we are extremely flexible. We could save $15 M in cap space next year by restructuring those 6 guys and still be getting them for bargain prices for the remainder of their contracts.

We have a shit ton of early draft spots to either trade for good role players or to draft good role players with.

1 first, 2 seconds, and most likely 2 thirds as well.

Id go CB, C, SS, and WR in the first 3 rounds. And double up on any of them except C.

we already have two thirds.. the hope is we get a comp pick from Goldson in the third..

however I am sure Goodell will say, nah.. they have enough higher picks, they will be fine with a 4th

Goldson was a starter for the Niners and played 6 years. A 3rd round sounds about right

I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with those factors. I think it's just how much money other teams spend on the Niners' FAs VS how much money the Niners spend on other teams' FAs.

Yeah, the Chiefs' QB got the tan first and then was cut. Whodathunk he'd be so unstable so as to get a race change. Good news is he looks stronger.

I would rather the NIner draft Marcel Jensen out of Fresno State.. Good in line blocker plus being 6-6, athletic and having big mitts, he can be an asset in the passing game
