1979.

40 years.

That's how long it's been since an OSU coach won COY in the B1G.

Earle Bruce went 11-0 in his first year replacing Woody Hayes.

Since then:
John Cooper
Jim Tressel - 1 National Championship, National COY, 2002 + 2 other trips to the NCG.
Urban Meyer - 1 National Championship, 1 undefeated season (his first year, after the team went 6-7 the previous year).

None of these guys ever won B1G COY. Tressel and Meyer dominated their rival and the conference, but like I said, they never coached a team that wasn't expected to compete for conference and national championships, so they weren't eligible.

Let em have their little moral victories.

So who is the B1G Coach of the year?

Candidates:
PJ Fleck - 9-0 @ Minnesota control their own destiny for B1G West and CFP
Lovie Smith - 6-4 @ Illinois, Bowl eligible
Tom Allen - 7-2 @ Indiana, ranked for the first time in 25 years
Ryan Day - 9-0 @ Ohio State, #1 in the CFP rankings, first time ever for a B1G team.

I have to go with PJ Fleck.

Ryan Day is eliminated, because Ohio State coaches aren't really eligible.
Smith and Allen have done good things with their programs, but PJ is head and shoulders above the rest.

With 3 games to go in the regular season, Fleck is my candidate.

here's the key to winning COY:

1) coach a team with low expectations
2) exceed those expectations

The reason Ohio State coaches aren't eligible? They always fail at step 1.

It's utter BS....... the award means absolutely nothing. If an OSU coach hasn't won it since '79?????? Since 2001, there have been at least 3 years OSU should've won it.

That would by order.

The COY Award is a popularity contest, and Ohio State coaches are just not popular.

I would say that Day doing well proves that Urban shouldn’t have won since it doesn’t matter who the coach is there.

Explain the Luke Fickell season. Also Day is exceeding Urban's results

It's not that... We're just expected to be good, so when we are it's no big deal.

As many Ohio State fans have said Fickell wasn’t actually the head coach.
I'm not pinning all the blame on Fickell. He was too inexperienced, and we were missing most of our best players for part of the season. He was the coach at the time, though.

I remember the blowback when Urban was hired and said that he was going to do things the SEC way(not an exact quote). He was vilified in the B1G press. He would never win a COY. Plus, I agree, it is hard to do a greater job that being great to begin with. You guys going 12-0 is a given(except to the few teams that can compete). You guys recruit the best in the conference. If that was what the award was for, you'd win it hands down. However, I have never seen an instance where your coaches were considered great game coaches.

As many Ohio State fans have said Fickell wasn’t actually the head coach.

Then who was? First time I ever heard someone say Fickell wasn't the HC. And which Ohio State fans said that? Or are you just making stuff up again like you did a few days ago? The other day you tried to blame Ohio State for backing outta series with Tennessee, Georgia & Carolina.

Two of those were cancelled because the conference (not Ohio State) went to a 9 game conference schedule. And the other was cancelled because the conference (not Ohio State) started a series with the Pac 12 that began in 2017.

2014- Sparty played 4 OOC games
2015- Sparty played 4 OOC games
2016- played 3 OOC games due to the 9 game conference schedule

Something was changed by someone. But keep blaming Ohio State for changes the conference made.

Please list me what teams Michigan State backed out on because of the 9 game schedule.

I'll trade you coach of the year honors for conference championships and playoff appearances if it really upsets all you OSU fans that much that it's been 40 years.
