$67M to two players, one of whom is suspended for the next two seasons and the other has thrown 22 innings mostly as a middle reliever.

From 1999 through 2013, The New York Yankees had the highest OPENING DAY TEAM SALARY.
In the last 25 Years, The New York Yankees LOWEST OPENING DAY TEAM SALARY was seventh.. ( They average 1.6 )
In six out of the last nine seasons, the Los Angeles Dodgers have been number ONE.

I'm sure glad the luxury tax is doing it's job............SARCASM

Money sure does help and being smart where you spend it and having a good farm system so when you need to bring up players or you need players other teams want in trade you have them.

There was some discussion about this topic on the NBA board a few weeks back. I think there should be a “cap”, but I think it needs to be dynamic.

if a team developed the player, they should be able to get a discount to keep the player (meaning the salary paid to said player should not count 100% towards the “cap”). If a team traded for the player, they should also get a discount on their salary cap hit. And how long the player has been with the team should count as well.

BS numbers, but I am using them to demonstrate my idea…

Player developed by team (he made his MLB debut with the team): 50% of salary counts towards cap

Player signs as a FA from another team: 100% counts towards cap in year 1; 90% counts in year 2; 80% counts in year 3; down to 50%).

Player is acquired in a trade; 75% in year 1; 65% in year 2; down to 50%).

MLB min salary is deducted from every player as “free” (it doesn’t count towards cap — if the min is 1M and the cap is 100m, a player signing a 1 year FA contract from another team for 20m, only 19m will count towards the cap.

This system allows players to move freely when they reach FA, but their current team has an advantage in resigning them.

If your team is owned by a billionaire, please don't cry poverty.

yup the mariners took in 313 mil in revenue in 2021 and spent 104 on player expenses but cry me a river:suds:
To be fair, player salaries are not the only expenses. I am not going to claim knowledge of the P&L sheets of the teams, but salaries are far from the only expense.

That said, I fully believe that any team that wants to compete CAN compete (financially, not necessarily competence-wise). Just look at the Padres as an example. Maybe the Dodgers and/or Yanks will always have a built in advantage. But there is no reason why the Pirates struggle to put together a 50m payroll. That is an ownership decision to run the team as a cash cow rather than a competitive entity.

Why would anyone complain about what the MLB players get paid
or the stupid owners who pay the ridiculous salaries?

But who really pays?

$400 for a family of four to watch
$100 parking fee
$20 for a beer
etc., etc,

It's like the dance band on the Titanic.

Aaron Judge getting paid 300m+ has absolutely zero effect on the price of a beer at Yankee Stadium. The willingness of the fan to pay for a beer at Yankee Stadium is the only thing that effects the price of a beer at Yankee Stadium.

If the Yanks lost Judge, does anyone REALLY believe that the Yanks would say “well, we don’t need the money to pay Judge now, so we will drop the price of beer at Yankee Stadium by a dollar this year.”?

Anyone who thinks that would happen lives in a different reality from the real reality.

After yesterday's Carlos Correa deal, I think I need to apologize to the board for my earlier post
